Let's face it...life sometimes is hard and can just suck. When we are faced with life's challenges we can be discouraged, get tired, and become weary. What we need is motivation, encouragement, and a helping hand that keeps us going. That's the idea of GRINDIT! We find our strength to endure when we focus on Jesus. God's own Son wasn't exempt from life's challenges and He didn't do anything to deserve what he went through! And yet He did...willingly, therefore we find our hope in Him.

The church at Corinth has become proud and arrogant since Paul left. He started the church in Acts 18 and stayed in Corinth for a year and a half but after leaving, they turned inward and began to be jealous of one another and quarreling. He pokes at them a little by telling them they have become rich and have everything they need, living like kings who are sovereign and have lots of power. They have forgotten were their gifts come from—God, and they are relying on themselves. Paul will send Timothy to Corinth to help them learn some humility before he arrives for a visit. He gives them the option: learn now before I get there or it will not be pretty when I come!

MC Hammer had a song in the late 80s, early 90s called Too Legit To Quit. Paul calls Titus his “true son in the faith.” What we don’t see in English is that Paul is saying, “Titus is a legitimate born son in the faith.” Paul had established his authority and credibility in the beginning of his letter and now he is establishing Titus’ authority. Paul says, “Titus has the same faith as I have. He serves the same God, Jesus is his master, and he is filled with the same Holy Spirit as me; therefore, he is a credible source and you, you Cretans who are used to being deceived, you can trust Titus.” Can people trust you?

The law was good because it showed us what sin is however, it also held us captive because there wasn’t any way to be set free from the bondage of sin...that is...until the way of faith came. That way of faith has a name, Paul says, and his name is Jesus, or Yeshua which means, “God is Salvation.” When Jesus came, he came with the authority from God and he would say, “You have heard it said (the law), but I say to you...” and the people were amazed at his teaching and hius authority. Paul tells the church at Galatia, you have a choice to make. Yo have been taught about Jesus, you believed in Jesus, but now you are putting your trust in yourself by trying to be obedient to the law. You can continue down this path but it will not turn out well for you. You can quit trying yourself and put your faith in Jesus like you were taught from the beginning and be filled with the Holy Spirit so he can take care of everything for you and you’re guaranteed to be in with God. What’s your choice? Faith or your works?

In establishing his authority and defending it to the churches in Galatia, Paul makes a profound statement, “But even before I was born, God chose me and called me by his marvelous grace.” Paul makes it clear that he did not choose this life that he lives, God chose it for him. He was a bad dude that loved God. He was a Pharisee, knew God’s word, and he had a zeal for God like nobody else! However, it was misguided zeal for he took it and persecuted the church thinking he was doing God a favor. In his fleshly way of thinking, he thought he was defending God and keeping this blasphemous message about Jesus from spreading but God had a different plan. Jesus happened and it radically changed Paul’s life!

When you want to confront someone about an issue, you better have some authority or you’ll get laughed at to your face! In the episode of Andy Griffith where Barney confronts the two men for selling fruits and vegetables on the side of the road without a permit, they threaten to beat him up. Barney leaves because of fear but comes back to confront them pointing out that his badge represents a higher authority and they better obey it or pay the consequences. Paul tells the church at Galatia, “My authority doesn’t come from any man but from Jesus himself and it is in your best interest to obey the gospel I preached to you and not some false gospel some slick talking person is speaking. If not, you’ll pay the consequences.” This message we carry and share, the gospel, has our back because Jesus is our authority!

Paul says in verse 17, “With the Lord’s authority I say this...” Does this mean everything he said previously is without the Lord’s authority? Of course not. He is making a transition here from telling the church at Ephesus to live a life worthy of their calling to how NOT to live. And to show how serious the matter is, Paul is saying, “The Lord has my back on what I am about to say,” and he goes into how they have been called out from the world and have been given a new life in Christ...therefore...live like it! It’s a great message for us 2,000 years later...We have been called out from the world, we are new creations in Christ, filled with the Holy Spirit and we should act like it on a daily basis!

Paul has taken the time to think about what God has done for him and anyone who obeys the gospel and it humbles him. He says he wants us all to experience the love the Father has for us and what he has done through His Son, Jesus. He wants us to know the power that is within us as believers, those who have put their faith in Jesus. The same power that was at work in the gospels, in the book of Acts, and in the life of Paul, also works in us! Jesus said he is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and Paul makes it clear that we have the same power working in us because of Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Will you take the time to reflect on who you are in Christ and who lives in you?

Jesus goes into Jerusalem with no fear and faces his enemies, the religious leaders, head on. He cleanses the Temple from their greediness, and they want to know where he is getting his authority from. Jesus asks them a question and they don’t answer it and therefore, Jesus doesn’t give them an answer to their question. Mark points out that Jesus came to the Temple and observed what was happening. Again, nothing gets past God, He sees everything and knows everything. God was walking around in His Temple and the religious leaders had no idea yet God knew everything they were doing and he would come in to clean house! There’s a day of reckoning coming and we better be ready!

Jesus and his disciples go to church, or their version of it anyway and a man shows up while Jesus is teaching and he is demon possessed. The demon acknowledges Jesus and calls him the Holy One of God. Jesus immediately shuts the demon up and casts him out of the man right there in front of the crowd. They are amazed, not only at Jesus’ teaching because he is teaching with authority and not as the teachers of the law, but they are amazed at his authority over the demons! Ig Jesus didn’t have their attention before, he has it now! Does he have yours?

Paul was telling the Christians at the church in Rome to love their enemies and bless them. In the very next breath he tells them to obey the governing authorities. He is speaking about the Roman government, the ones who were responsible for killing Jesus and persecuting Christians! What?!?! I have to be obedient to them?!?!? Yes, because God has established their authority and to be disobedient to them, is being disobedient to God.

Could you imagine seeing an angel? What happens when someone comes into the presence of an angel? They fall on their face! Hebrews 13:2 actually tells us there is a good chance we have seen an angel and didn’t know it! But as cool as that is, Jesus is better. Whatever is going on with the audience, the author of Hebrews wants their readers to know Jesus is better than the angels and he makes his case for that in chapter 1. Jesus is sitting in a place of honor at the Father’s right hand and not one time did God ever say to an angel, “This is my Son,” however, He did say that to Jesus a couple of times! One day we will see all the angels in heaven, but even more awesome than that, we will see God the Father, the Holy Spirit, and best of all, Jesus: the one who paid the price for our sin so that we can have the forgiveness of God!

In Luke 3 we are hit hard with facts right off the bat! We are given people’s names, where they ruled, when they ruled, and there has been artifacts found that back up the information Luke gives us so why do people continue to not believe the Bible? By God’s grace and His mercy He provided us a sacrifice for our sins to be forgiven! And it was always His plan! God knew Adam would blow it and sin which is why He always had a plan to redeem man…He would send His own son to be the sacrifice that would cleans man from our sin. Jesus, the Messiah, knew what his mission was—the cross—and he never shy’s away from that mission. He died on the cross, shed his blood for the payment of man’s sin, was buried in a tomb for three days, and walked out of that tomb alive! Then he showed himself alive to many people over forty days, and then ascended back to heaven where he sits at the Father’s right hand, a place of highest honor, a place of power and all authority. It compelled Luke to write this gospel and he says from the very beginning, “I’m writing this so you know it is true. You may choose not to believe it, but that doesn’t change the facts! These people, including Jesus, were real people who walked on this earth and Jesus is the only one who died and came out of that grave alive! Why would we not want Jesus on our team?!?!?!
