Let's face it...life sometimes is hard and can just suck. When we are faced with life's challenges we can be discouraged, get tired, and become weary. What we need is motivation, encouragement, and a helping hand that keeps us going. That's the idea of GRINDIT! We find our strength to endure when we focus on Jesus. God's own Son wasn't exempt from life's challenges and He didn't do anything to deserve what he went through! And yet He did...willingly, therefore we find our hope in Him.

Jesus is having his last Passover meal with his disciples. He will be dead in a few days and it will totally blow their minds. Despite having told them many times, they just never got it, they didn't understand. While he is in the home of a Pharisee, a woman comes in and pours oil on his body and some of the disciples are indignant. They couldn't believe this woman had wasted so much money on this oil and the should have spent the money on the poor. Yet, before the night is over, one of them will betray Jesus in exchange for thirty pieces of silver. The time has come...

Jesus has fed a crowd of over 5,000 with just 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish. The disciples helped with this miracle, they were a part of it when they hd 12 basketfuls remaining yet, in a very short time, they forget what Jesus had done. They are asked by Jesus to feed another huge crowd, mostly Gentiles, and they freak out. They had forgotten what Jesus was capable of doing. After this event, some Pharisees show up and want Jesus to perform a miracle but he refused to do so and as he is traveling in a boat with his disciples he tells them, "Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees." They think he is scolding them for not having any bread. As they blame one another for not bringing any bread, Jesus does scold them for having eyes to see and ears to hear yet they don't understand. Do you "get it"?

Jesus is challenged by the Pharisees and Sadducees yet again and after a mic drop moment, he gets in the boat with his disciples and heads to Philippi. While there he warns them about the leaven of the pharisees and they mistake what Jesus is saying. They think he is scolding them because they forgot to bring the bread along on the trip. So Jesus takes this opportunity to give a survey to his disciples and he wants to know who people say he is and then he asks his disciples who they say he is. Peter gives an answer that is, in the words from an Ashford and Simpson song, solid as a rock! We can trust Jesus, the immovable stone!

Something we don’t hear about to often is Jesus going into the region of Tyre and Sidon where it is heavily populated with Gentiles. Tyre and Sidon have an interesting history and two synagogues from the time Jesus was walking on the earth have been discovered there and one the best preserved Hippodromes is there to this day. Learn a lesson from the disciples here…Remember! Jesus had just fed a crowd of at least 5,000, but more like 10,000, with 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread. This crowd of Gentiles is with Jesus for 3 days and he wants to feed them and the disciples freak out because they don’t have enough food to do so. How quickly we forget what God has already done in our lives and we act like He can’t do it again. Reflect, remember, keep in memory the blessings of God and how He came through for you in the past and keep the faith…

We know Jesus was a giver and the ultimate gift he gave was his life on the cross for our sin, but his example of giving goes way back before the cross. He was always meeting people’s needs, from his disciples to the crowds that constantly gathered around him everywhere he went. After hearing the news about the death of John the Baptizer, Jesus went off to be alone but some people heard where he was going and a they ran ahead of him to beat him to the spot. As they went, they told others and by the time Jesus got to his destination, a crowd of over 5,000 men, not including women and children had gathered to meet him. The man went off to grieve but instead, he was met by this greedy, selfish crowd who wanted their needs met. How did Jesus handle the situation? He took time to heal their sick, to feed them using a miracle, and taught them about the kingdom. He was moved with compassion and he put his needs aside, and met the needs of the crowd. We are told we are to be like Jesus. Are we? Do people see a giver or a selfish person in the crowd? The Problem of Suffering” by Kippy Myers. I’ll put a link to the book in show notes (https://www.hesterpublications.com/store/p104/TheProblemof_Suffering.html).

Three days had passed since Jesus was tortured and killed on the cross. The women had prepared spices for the body but since the Sabbath had started, they had to wait. They go as soon as daylight begins to break on Sunday morning only to find the tomb is empty! After having a discussion with some angels they go back to break the news to the rest of the disciples. Meanwhile, there are two dudes walking toward Emmaus when Jesus appears to them yet they didn’t know it was him. Jesus asks them why they are so upset and they explain to him what had just taken place and how they have lost all hope. They invite him to stay the night with them and the first thing they do is eat a meal. When Jesus says the blessing, they recognize him and he disappears! They run back to Jerusalem to tell the others and while they are explaining what has happened, Jesus appears in the room and eats some fish with them. God has a sense of humor….

Jesus goes into detail after the disciples asked him where they should prepare the Passover meal. Why such detail? What does it all mean? I believe it was Jesus attempting to show the disciples that he is exactly who he claims to be because they are about to be in massive confusion and disbelief. Every detail Jesus gave them was fulfilled. It happened exactly as how Jesus said it would. Then he says he is “eager” to eat the passer meal with them meaning he had a desire, a lust to eat this Passover meal with them. Why? Because he knew his suffering would soon be over and he would be back with his Father where he belongs—at the father’s right hand making intercession for us.

Luke 22 is a heavy chapter because this is where everything for the disciples goes haywire. Their best friend, whom they have spent the last 3 years with and have watched him do nothing but good to people, will be betrayed, arrested, and crucified the very next morning. Jesus has one last Passover meal with them and he exposes Judas as the betrayer. In this episode I talk about the Passover, now called the Lord’s Supper, and how Jesus became our Passover Lamb that was slain for our sin and reconciled us to God. He is our “once and for all” sacrifice and when God sees the blood of Jesus, He passes over us or he spares us from death and gives us a home with him in heaven! Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?

Jesus, as he does so eloquently, tells the disciples a story to illustrate the power of prayer and what is going on when we do pray. Some guy wasn’t prepared for the guests that will soon be arriving at his house so in a panic he goes to a neighbor’s house while they are all in the bed, knocks on the door, and asks for three loaves of bread and he explains why. The neighbor is reluctant because he was comfortable and wanted to go to sleep but the guy won’t take no for an answer and he keeps on knocking on the door. Realizing he won’t get any sleep unless if he gives this guy the bread, he gets up and gets the bread and gives it to the persistent neighbor. How many times have we prayed for something a time or two and gave up thinking God wasn’t going to answer? Jesus tells his disciples and us, “Be persistent and if you keep on knocking, God will answer!” That is a promise from the mouth of Jesus himself…

When Paul was visiting with the believers in Troas, the first day of the week arrived and they took the Lord’s Supper together. One can read Exodus 12 to learn about the Passover, which is where the Lord’s Supper, or communion, came from. A lamb without any imperfections had to be sacrificed and its blood had to be put over the doorposts of the people’s home. When the death angel came along and saw the blood of the sacrificed lamb, he would “Pass Over” that house and whoever was inside the house was saved from death. 1 Corinthians 5:7 says Jesus is our Passover Lamb. It is by the sacrifice he made on the cross, the blood he shed, and the empty tomb that our sins are forgiven and when death comes, we will spend eternity with God…if and only if we are washed in the blood of our Passover Lamb, Jesus. We take communion to remind us of that sacrifice Jesus gave on our behalf so why do so many churches today not take the time to partake of communion?
