Episode 546: 1 Corinthians 4 Part 3 You Think You’re All That But...

The church at Corinth has become proud and arrogant since Paul left. He started the church in Acts 18 and stayed in Corinth for a year and a half but after leaving, they turned inward and began to be jealous of one another and quarreling. He pokes at them a little by telling them they have become rich and have everything they need, living like kings who are sovereign and have lots of power. They have forgotten were their gifts come from—God, and they are relying on themselves. Paul will send Timothy to Corinth to help them learn some humility before he arrives for a visit. He gives them the option: learn now before I get there or it will not be pretty when I come!

Paul mentions to the church in Corinth that they are holy because they have called on the name of the Lord. Not only them, but people outside of Corinth, both Jew and Gentile. What does it mean to “Call on the name of the Lord”? Does that mean we can just call on Jesus and be saved? What about baptism? Is baptism necessary for salvation? Should I get baptized? We take a deep dive into these two very important questions and we aren’t regurgitating someone else’s teaching. We will bring you truth straight from the word of God because THAT is what matters!

The church at Corinth was jacked up in all kinds of ways...just like the church in our day! People make comments how they don’t want to go to “church” because it’s full of hypocrites. Churches are full of people...people are jacked up...we ALL need Jesus! However, the church in Corinth seemed to bring a lot of their culture into the church instead of allowing the Holy Spirit to shape them but in all of that, Paul still tells them, “You are God’s holy people.” Despite being jacked up in all kinds of ways, they said “yes” to Jesus and his blood washes their sins away...just like you and me if we have said “yes” to him.

Episode 521: 2 Timothy 4 Part 4 Paul’s Final Words To Timothy

This is the last epistle Paul would write and he has encouraged Timothy to take the baton and keep going. He has warned him of the challenges he faces and he has exhorted him to continue even in the face of persecution. He gives some final thoughts and gives some greetings to some coworkers including Priscilla and Aquila. These two people started the church at Ephesus which is where Timothy is when he receives this letter. But as he closes his letter, Paul has one request for Timothy...he tells him to get there before Winter. Why? Because he had just told him to bring his coat that he had left behind with Carpus at Troas. The man needs his coat because it will be cold soon! Paul is ready to go and he sees death as a ride into eternity to be with his Savior.

This is the last chapter, of the last epistle, that will be coming from Paul as he is about to meet death when Nero has him beheaded. It is absolutely packed with some dynamic teaching as Paul urges Timothy to keep the fight going for Jesus, the gospel, and the kingdom of God. In the very first verse, we are challenged with some rich thoughts that Paul is writing in the very presence of God and Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead when Jesus comes to set up the kingdom of God. Paul tells Timothy to cling to his faith and keep a clear conscience. This tells me that there was something Timothy had to do which is contrary to teaching that is happening in many churches today that say, “There is nothing you to be saved. It is beyond your control.” If that is the case, why would Paul command Timothy these things? And not only that, Paul gives examples of men whom he threw out of the church in Ephesus because they violated their conscience and taught false doctrine! Do you have a clean conscience?

Paul leaves Timothy in Ephesus to deal with some issues in the church at Ephesus. He is a young man who is timid so Paul will tell him not to let that be a deterrent to what he is called to do. Before diving in to what instructions Paul gives Timothy for the church at Ephesus, we take a deep dive into the book of Ephesians to explore what some issues the church had, along with what Jesus had to say about the church in Revelation 2. There isn’t a perfect church because there aren’t any perfect people, so the church is full of imperfect people, or what people in the world call “hypocrites”. We are all sinners in need of salvation, grace, and mercy, and thought the church is full of imperfect people, it’s still the body of Christ and together, we strive to be more like him every day! Episode 463: 1 Thessalonians 2 Part 2 You Are Our Crown

Could you imagine being a church that was being persecuted, you’re seeing your loved ones tortured, even killed for following Jesus, and the man who brought the gospel to you writes a letter of encouragement and during his letter, he says this, “For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Is it not even you in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at His coming? For you are our glory and joy.” Paul reminds them to keep walking with the Lord because he will come to the rescue soon, and he says the church at Thessalonica are his glory and joy. We put stock in so many of our accomplishments: bank accounts, houses, fancy cars, etc...but what about the people we have shared the gospel with? Have you won anyone to Jesus? Do you consider them your joy and crown?

One thing the early church had as a part of its DNA was persecution. Jesus told his disciples they would face it, he faced it, and after Acts 2, they faced it. Jesus even warned Paul he would be persecuted as he travels around taking the gospel to the Gentiles...and he was the very one who led the charge when it comes to persecution! He was there at the stoning of Stephen and he says he gave his approval when it happened. Now, this man and his colleagues, are getting beaten with rods, whipped, flogged, and even stoned! But...they never flinched or backed down. Why? How? Because the love they have for Jesus and how badly they wanted others to experience him!

Episode 461: 1 Thessalonians 1 Part 2 What Have We Done To the Church?

When we look at what Paul says about the church at Thessalonica, it puts the American church to shame. This church was facing severe persecution yet they worked hard and did loving deeds. The Greek word for “deeds” is kopos and it means they toiled and labored, even against opposition, to the point of exhaustion. They made such an impact for the kingdom that Paul said everywhere they go, people are talking about the church in Thessalonica. In America, we have turned “church” into big buildings with air conditioning, we come in and sing a few songs then listen to a preacher for a few minutes, while our kids are hanging out in youth ministry where they are entertained for a while. We soak it all in like a sponge, go home, and hardly mention Jesus, if at all, outside of that building. We expect people to just “come in” instead of us “going out” and bringing them in. What have we done?

Episode 460: 1 Thessalonians 1 Part 1 Small Church, Huge Impact!

The church at Thessalonica started in Acts 17. Paul and Silas made their way there after getting run out of Philippi. Luke says Paul reasoned with the Jews at the synagogue for three Sabbaths while most historians say Paul stayed there for about three months. He was run out of Thessalonica as well and went to Berea. However, that three month period made a huge impact there! The men and women who chose to obey the gospel took it to heart and wanted others to know about Jesus too! They were known in the region around them as people who did faithful work, loving deeds, because they put their hope in Jesus. May that be said of us!

Episode 445: Galatians 3 Part 2 You Already Had God’s Approval!

Paul is upset with the church in Galatia because they have believed a false gospel. They have taken the faith they have put in God, in what Jesus has done for them on the cross, and put it in themselves, in their own works, their own righteousness because they are trying to win God’s approval by following the law. Paul says, “You already had God’s approval! How else do you think you were filled with the Holy Spirit? How do you think you were performing miracles?” It is because they had put their faith in God…just like Abraham.

Episode 440: Galatians 2 Part 1 You Can Trust Me

Paul is rehearsing his story to the Galatians because he is proving to them that they can trust him. Why? Because he has been filled with the same Holy Spirit the apostles have and he has even had meetings with those apostles and they gave him their approval. He calls the apostles “pillars” which in the Greek means “Pillars of fire” and Paul says, “These pillars of fire accepted me and Barnabas as co-workers; therefore, I am a pillar of fire too! He even tells them in detail about a trip he took to Jerusalem to tell the apostles the message he was preaching to the Gentiles and Paul reassures the Galatians that they were all in unity. Again showing the church that they can trust what he is saying, but even greater than the apostles, Paul said he was directed by God Himself to go to Jerusalem.

Episode 416: Colossians 1 Part 1 Epaphras Was the Man!

Did you know Paul didn’t start the church in Colosse? In fact, as far as we know, he never even visited them! So how did they hear the gospel? How did a congregation start filled with Gentiles who love Jesus? More than likely it started with a man named Epaphras who was a coworker of Paul. He had learned from the best and at some point, he went on a mission himself preaching the gospel in Colosse and the Holy Spirit did a mighty work through him! We only have a few verses about Epaphras but what we do have shows us what a man of God he was and how he inspires us to be like him!

Episode 398: Ephesians 6 Part 2 Obedient Slaves and Masters

Like it or not, slavery has existed for a long time and it existed when Jesus was walking on the earth. When Paul was traveling around on his missionary journeys, he met many slaves and masters. He includes them in his letter to the church at Ephesus and he encourages them to work towards unity by being obedient. The key for God to be glorified in our lives, whether slave or free, is unity. From husbands and wives, their children, to slaves and their masters, we all have to get rid of all selfishness, fleshly desires, put others first, listen to one another, be obedient to instruction, and remember who we serve, God.

Episode 383: Ephesians 3 Part 1 “Carefully Joined Together”

Paul is reflecting on how God had a plan in place where Jews and Gentiles would worship together in unity, in one body, the church. He says this plan was mysterious for a long time but it has now been revealed. There is no guessing as to what that plan is because Paul tells us exactly what the mysterious plan is, and it was purposed by God Himself from all eternity. That plan was for God Himself to put on flesh, die on a cross, be resurrected, giving both Jews and Gentiles the hope of salvation and being with Him in heaven for eternity! You are a part of God’s plan...have you accepted the invitation?

Episode 303: Romans 16 Women Keep Silent?

We finish the study of there Book of Romans in this podcast breaking down the final chapter, Romans 16. In his greetings, Paul mentions 29 people, 10 of which are women. We take a close look at these women, who they are, and what role they had in the local church at Rome. There are many in the church today that claim women should keep silent since the very person who wrote Romans said that to the church in Corinth. Do we have a contradiction by the author of these two letters? Absolutely not. Women are pertinent to the church back then as well as today! Women, know your role and do it well!

Paul has taken on the difficult task of trying to unify the church in Rome which is made up of Gentiles and Jews, two sets of people who didn't like each other for hundreds of years who are now worshiping together. It seems they had asked him some opinions about some certain matters and he replied back pointing them toward Jesus and he mentions something specific toward the middle of the chapter...he prays that God, the source of hope, will fill them completely with joy and peace, then they will flow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. As we grow closer to Christ, may we have this confidence!

Episode 296: Romans 12 Part 2 Two Ingredients: Humility and Unity

Pride. The Bible says a lot about pride and it's not good. What is good on their other hand is humility which is the opposite of pride. We are told to be people of humility and Jesus was our model to follow. Paul discusses humility here in chapter 12 and he also talks about unity. There is power in unity and we see this idea all through scripture from the Tower of Babel in Genesis to the united church in Acts. Humility and unity are two things we as Christ followers need to practice and that is what Paul urges the church in Rome to do.

Episode 270: Romans 1 Part 2 We Need Encouragement!

Before laying the hammer down in chapter 1, Paul edifies the church in his letter and brags on there faith and how the news of their faith is spreading all around the world! He then gives three reasons why he wants to visit the church in Rome as soon as he can: 1) to encourage them by imparting a spiritual gift to each one of them; 2: To be encouraged by the church itself, and if you have spent any tiome in ministry you know exactly what he means; 3) He wants to produce fruit in Rome by sharing the gospel among the people there.

Episode 241: Matthew 16 Part 1 A Mic Drop Moment For Jesus

Jesus is challenged by the Pharisees and Sadducees yet again and after a mic drop moment, he gets in the boat with his disciples and heads to Philippi. While there he warns them about the leaven of the pharisees and they mistake what Jesus is saying. They think he is scolding them because they forgot to bring the bread along on the trip. So Jesus takes this opportunity to give a survey to his disciples and he wants to know who people say he is and then he asks his disciples who they say he is. Peter gives an answer that is, in the words from an Ashford and Simpson song, solid as a rock! We can trust Jesus, the immovable stone!

Episode 123: Luke 8 Part 1 Women: Men's Property

People want equality today but did you know Jesus was way ahead of his time when it came to equality? Luke 8 begins with three names of women who left everything to follow Jesus. Luke tells us these women were either healed of a disease or they had demons cast out of them. He mentions three by name, Mary Magdalene, Joanna, who was the wife of Herod Antipas' business manager, and a lady named Susanna. But Luke then mentions something interesting...he says there were other women that gave of their resources to help Jesus and his disciples. Fellas, we have to step up our game when it comes to serving the Lord especially in the our local church gatherings. Many churches would have closed their doors by now if the women have not stepped up! Thank you to all of the women who serve our Lord and Savior; those who minister to the needs of our communities and glorify God with their resources. May God bless you all...

Episode 70: Acts 11 The Jews, The Gentiles, and Jesus

Word gets back to the church in Jerusalem about what happened with the Gentiles at Cornelius' house and the believers there aren't very happy about it. They couldn't believe that Peter would go in the house of a Gentile and even eat a meal with them! However, after they got the facts first hand from Peter they changed their minds and were delighted that God had chosen the Gentiles as well...or so it seemed. Racism between the Jews and Gentiles was deep and it would be an ongoing issue even for those who followed Jesus! In Acts 11 the Jewish Christians follow the coastline of the Mediterranean Sea preaching Jesus to the Jews but when they came to Antioch of Syria they also shared the gospel with the Jews and what took place rocked their world! So many Gentiles were coming to the Lord they had to send Barnabas from Jerusalem to check things out and he travels to Tarsus to get Saul so he could help with the large growth of the new church there. This would be a relationship that would launch many churches as Saul and Barnabas would work together traveling around telling all people about Jesus!

Episode 61: Acts 8 Part 1 Saul's Passion For God

When Stephen was stoned by the religious leaders, there was a man present who completely agreed with the stoning...his name was Saul. This is the same Saul, that later became Paul, and wrote two thirds of the New Testament. He was one, if not the, greatest missionaries that ever lived. Before his conversion he wreaked havoc on the church, going from house to house, dragging men and women from their homes and putting them in jail. In Saul's (Paul's) on words he "was the worst sinner of all" but when he was giving his resume in Philippians 3. Saul (Paul) said he was "zealous for the law and followed it without fault." Really? He agreed and took part in the stoning of an innocent man and he wreaked havoc in the lives of innocent people who followed Jesus! He had the same attitude of the religious leaders; They thought they were serving God and yet they killed God Himself! How many people today claim to be followers of Christ yet they don't even know the Christ they follow!

The enemy of the church has tried his best to destroy it from the outside and since that hasn't worked he is going to try from the inside. Why not just cause a riff on the inside, a division, that way it will become weak and easier to dismantle...or so he thought! I mean, Jesus himself said a kingdom divided against itself cannot stand. The Greek speaking Christians feel like they are being snubbed by the Hebrew speaking Christians but they did exactly what they should have done! Instead of sweeping it under the rug or pretending nothing was wrong while it continued to fester, they made their issue known and the apostles came up with a solution. As a result, unity was kept and God kept working in mighty ways! We should do the same when an issue arises an take care of the matter quickly!

Episode 56: Acts 5 Part 1 Liar Liar Pants on Fire!

It's just one little lie. What's the big deal? A lie cost Ananias and Sapphira their lives. They had sold their property and kept some of the money for themselves but when they came to give it to the apostles to help the needy, they lied about how much they had sold the property for thinking nobody knew what they had planned together. The only problem was they didn't think about the fact that God is all knowing and He sees everything! Peter calls them out on it and said, "You didn't lie to us...you lied to God!" Immediately they fell to the ground dead. It may seem unfair and extreme to us but it got the point across to the early church...God is serious about sin and we better be if we call ourselves a Christ follower!

Episode 57: Acts 5 Part 2 Persecution begins...

The apostles are arrested for a second time for telling people about Jesus but this arrest had a different motivation behind it...jealousy. The Sadducees were jealous and their power was being challenged by some "unlearned and ignorant men". People were coming by the groves to get their loved ones healed from sickness or delivered from a demon. They were being converted to Christ and the message was starting to flow outside of Jerusalem. It's beginning to spread and the religious leaders want to put a stop to it. The problem is they are fighting against God, not man so when they arrested the apostles, an angel came and freed them giving them instructions to go right back to the Temple and preach Jesus...and they did. They were arrested an third time and this time they were flogged, which was the same thing that happened to Jesus just before he was hung a cross. Persecution has begun but this didn't even slow them down for they met at the Temple daily and they went to people's homes to share Jesus! Do you share your faith? Do you tell people about Jesus? What is holding you back?

Episode 33: John 13 Part Two

Do you hold a grudge? Is there someone in the church you avoid because they hurt you? If we claim to be a follower of Christ then we must love like Christ and it's NOT an option and His love is WITHOUT conditions! If anyone had the right to hold a grudge it was Jesus! He chose Judas Iscariot to be one of his twelve disciples knowing he was greedy, a thief, and that he would sell him out for thirty pieces of silver and yet he washes his feet, then in the garden he called him friend as he was being betrayed! From the cross he is looking at the ones who crucified him and he says, "Father, forgive them...And Paul points out that Jesus died for us while we were his enemy! Do we love like Christ loves?
