They think he is scolding them for not having any bread. As they blame one another for not bringing any bread, Jesus does scold them for having eyes to see and ears to hear yet they don't understand. Up until Acts 10, the church consisted of only Jews and was located in Jerusalem. When persecution came in Acts 8, the church scattered and went beyond Jerusalem but was still geared toward the Jews. Then Peter has a vision, Cornelius, a Gentile, has a visitation from an angel, and Peter goes to visit. When he does, he tells the Gentiles that had gathered at Cornelius’ house about Jesus and the Holy Spirit falls on them and Peter baptizes them. The Gentiles are now able to hear and accept the gospel. The church in Rome was made up of both Jews and Gentiles but for the first 10 chapters, Paul has been talking to the Jews. In chapter 11, he begins to address the Gentiles and how their salvation came about. This woman was a Gentile so she had many things going against her. Gentiles weren’t very well liked by Jews and she was also a woman. In Jesus’ culture, women weren’t very respected, in fact they were treated much like shepherds. They weren’t even allowed to be a witness in court yet God used a woman to testify that His son was alive after the resurrection of Jesus. This Gentile woman was desperate because she knew Jesus could take care of her situation and this was her opportunity. She was not going to give up and go home when all she was given was silence and discouragement from Jesus and his disciples. When Jesus sees her faith, he was moved to action.
