All I have heard I have heard is these verses used to tell wives on how to submit to her husband and how the husband is to treat his wife by loving her. I don’t believe that’s Paul’s intent in this section of scripture. It’s part of it, but he is telling the married couple to do these things because of a specific reason—unity in the body of Christ. If we get any one of these out of line, we are not walking according to the will of God! If we are out of the will of God, our lives are filled with chaos and our prayers will not be answered. We all experience then in our walk from time to time, but don’t let your heart harden and stay out of God’s will! Two opposite ends of the spectrum represented here. The Pharisee is bragging to God about how faithful he is and what all he has done to show his faithfulness. Then there is the tax collector who won’t even lift is head up as he is praying. He is beating his chest and asks God to have mercy on him because he is a sinner. Jesus said the tax collector was justified before God, not the Pharisee. Why? Because the Pharisee was trusting in himself, his deeds, while the tax collector was trusting God to save him. No matter how many good deeds we do, no matter how many accolades we collect over time, we cannot make it to heaven on our own. We have to rely on God and His Son, Jesus. We must learn some humility, drop our pride, and rely on the Savior to wash our sin away. Jesus ends up telling them if they would just sit at the foot of the table to begin with, they may be invited to sit at the head of the table and save themselves the embarrassment. What he wanted these religious leaders to learn was humility. humility. He said, “Jesus, my brother will not give me my part of the inheritance. Will you say something to him so he will?” The Bible is not a weapon for us to use to bully someone and get our way. When we can’t control or manipulate someone, the last thing we should do is try to use Jesus, or the bible, to get our way and that is what is going here. This guy in the crowd can’t get his way so he thought if Jesus told the brother to give his part of the estate to him, then the brother would surely listen to Jesus and do what is right! Right???!!! This is hardly ever the case. People that have hurt you or have sinned against you, they know what they did was wrong. No matter how many times you throw bible verses in their face, they aren’t going to listen and most likely will not apologize. This man was focusing on the wrong thing and that’s what Jesus wanted him to learn. Don’t focus on what others are doing or not doing, instead focus on what you, as a follower of Christ are doing or not doing. As we do that, we can ask God to take care of the situation as He sees fit! manipulate, brother, apology, apologize, humble, humility As Jesus was talking to his disciples, there was a man who interrupted him. He said, “Jesus, my brother will not give me my part of the inheritance. Will you say something to him so he will?” The Bible is not a weapon for us to use to bully someone and get our way. When we can’t control or manipulate someone, the last thing we should do is try to use Jesus, or the bible, to get our way and that is what is going here. This guy in the crowd can’t get his way so he thought if Jesus told the brother to give his part of the estate to him, then the brother would surely listen to Jesus and do what is right! Right???!!! This is hardly ever the case. People that have hurt you or have sinned against you, they know what they did was wrong. No matter how many times you throw bible verses in their face, they aren’t going to listen and most likely will not apologize. This man was focusing on the wrong thing and that’s what Jesus wanted him to learn. Don’t focus on what others are doing or not doing, instead focus on what you, as a follower of Christ are doing or not doing. As we do that, we can ask God to take care of the situation as He sees fit!
