Let's face it...life sometimes is hard and can just suck. When we are faced with life's challenges we can be discouraged, get tired, and become weary. What we need is motivation, encouragement, and a helping hand that keeps us going. That's the idea of GRINDIT! We find our strength to endure when we focus on Jesus. God's own Son wasn't exempt from life's challenges and He didn't do anything to deserve what he went through! And yet He did...willingly, therefore we find our hope in Him.

With the church at Corinth becoming arrogant and prideful after Paul left, he writes to them making fun of their attitude and he contrasts it with himself and the other apostles as being made a spectacle to the whole world by God. He says they are like a Greek play in the local theater, out there for the whole cosmos to see. But then he compares them to prisoners of war which is rough, opposite of what the church at Corinth is like. He could possibly be referring to The Lachish reliefs which were recently found and put in a British museum. They are carvings in Ninevah showing Sennacherib defeating Judah and taking prisoners back to Ninevah. You can read about it in 2 Kings 18-19. Paul is telling the church to learn some humility and quit the division that is going on between them.

The church at Corinth has become proud and arrogant since Paul left. He started the church in Acts 18 and stayed in Corinth for a year and a half but after leaving, they turned inward and began to be jealous of one another and quarreling. He pokes at them a little by telling them they have become rich and have everything they need, living like kings who are sovereign and have lots of power. They have forgotten were their gifts come from—God, and they are relying on themselves. Paul will send Timothy to Corinth to help them learn some humility before he arrives for a visit. He gives them the option: learn now before I get there or it will not be pretty when I come!

Paul has been dealing with division in the church at Corinth since chapter 1. That means he uses for chapters to confront this issue which means it very important. The division was coming from the people looking at Paul, Apollos, Peter, and others as THE most important person because they are the one who converted them to Jesus. Paul has told them, “We are nothing but simply the ones who plant and water so look to the one who DOES matter, Jesus.” In chapter 4 Paul says, “We are simply ministers who steward the mysteries of God.” When you look at this in the Greek, Paul uses a word that means “under rowers” referring to the ones who are below the deck rowing these big ships he travels on. They are unseen, not heard, and row to their captains command. Let that sink in...that totally goes against our 2026 culture!

Paul says we are in it to win it and we are in it together! He is in prison for preaching the gospel and the church at Philippi is concerned for him so they sent Epaphroditus to check on him. As the church is facing persecution and suffering for the cause of Christ, Paul says this is a time that we are to be selfless and not selfish, then he points to Jesus as our example. That's when we get those beautiful verses that describe the "attitude" or "mind" of Christ. Do we have the mind of Christ? Do we look like Jesus?

I have heard this passage in Ephesians 5 about husbands and wives, marriages, taught for over thirty years and not once, that I can remember, did anyone talk about the context. All I have heard I have heard is these verses used to tell wives on how to submit to her husband and how the husband is to treat his wife by loving her. I don’t believe that’s Paul’s intent in this section of scripture. It’s part of it, but he is telling the married couple to do these things because of a specific reason—unity in the body of Christ. It goes back to chapter 4 when he is talking about unity and unity being the will of God.

Paul has taken the time to think about what God has done for him and anyone who obeys the gospel and it humbles him. He says he wants us all to experience the love the Father has for us and what he has done through His Son, Jesus. He wants us to know the power that is within us as believers, those who have put their faith in Jesus. The same power that was at work in the gospels, in the book of Acts, and in the life of Paul, also works in us! Jesus said he is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and Paul makes it clear that we have the same power working in us because of Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Will you take the time to reflect on who you are in Christ and who lives in you?

What put Paul down on his knees before God? No, not when he was thrown from his horse on the road to Damascus, but when he took the time to consider the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth chose him to carry the message of the gospel to the Jews and the Gentiles. He was humbled because he knew where he once was and the life he was living, going from house to house, persecuting those who were following Jesus. Now he is a follower of Jesus himself, he has risked his life to spread the message of Jesus to the world, and soon he will be in heaven with Jesus because he will be put to death for his faith. Paul wants everyone to know the love the Father has for them. Do you?

Paul wants everyone to know the love the Father has for them. Do you?

No, not when he was thrown from his horse on the road to Damascus, but when he took the time to consider the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth chose him to carry the message of the gospel to the Jews and the Gentiles. He was humbled because he knew where he once was and the life he was living, going from house to house, persecuting those who were following Jesus.
James says, "If you are wise, prove it by living an honorable life and doing good works from humility." He is talking to believers who wanted to be teachers in the church but could not control their mouths. Why? Because they are allowing their flesh to control their actions; their hearts are full of jealousy and selfish ambition. James says godly wisdom is pure, peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. Which describes you? Are you controlled by the flesh or by the Spirit? What is coming from your heart? How do you know? Ask a friend, your spouse, a coworker...they'll tell you what is coming from your mouth because that is really your heart!

Jesus told the disciples he was going to be betrayed, die, and come back to life but the disciples were more concerned with who is the greatest among them. Jesus takes this opportunity to teach them about humility and being a servant. He takes a small child and puts the child on his lap and tells his disciples, be like this child and serve others. It's so easy to turn inward and be selfish, to gratify and satisfy the flesh, which is sin. Jesus takes that same child to show the dangers of our sin and causing others to sin. Then he tells them to be salt and add some flavor in the world.

A Gentile woman hears that Jesus is in town and she rushes to find him. When she does, she prostrates herself before him and asks him to cast a demon out of her little girl. Jesus calls her a dog and tells her he came for the Jews. This woman would not take no for an answer and her reply floors Jesus...in so much he heals her daughter. She shows us a great lesson in moving the heart of God--humility.

Pride. The Bible says a lot about pride and it's not good. What is good on their other hand is humility which is the opposite of pride. We are told to be people of humility and Jesus was our model to follow. Paul discusses humility here in chapter 12 and he also talks about unity. There is power in unity and we see this idea all through scripture from the Tower of Babel in Genesis to the united church in Acts. Humility and unity are two things we as Christ followers need to practice and that is what Paul urges the church in Rome to do.

Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem to die. He has explained to his disciples this day was coming. He is about a week away from the cross and shocking the known world at that time, As he is making his way to Jerusalem, he goes into more detail about what is going to transpire when he gets to Jerusalem. You would think the disciples would be upset and asking about it but no, two of them get their mommy involved and want power and honor, but Jesus gives them a dose of humility. As he is leaving Jericho, two blind men cry out to him and he gives them his full attention. They ask him to heal him and, of course, Jesus did and they followed him. I don't they are going to be excited about what t hey can now see!

Jesus has used a child to teach his disciples about humility and along with humility...forgiveness. when children play together, there can be a little bit of a skirmish but within seconds, they are right back to playing as if nothing ever happened. Jesus tells his disciples they must forgive others and Peter thinks he has a great handle on it when he asks, "How many times do I have to forgive? Seven Times?" Jesus lets him know immediately that he, as well as any follower of his, must forgive every time, all the time and he gives a story to emphasize his point. Let go of that grudge. Missing heaven isn't worth it!

Men have huge egos and are very competitive. It was no different with the disciples! They were men who came from all kinds of backgrounds and occupations. The three that had special privileges, Peter, James, and John were commercial fishermen who competed in the fishing business to make a living and we’ll see this play out as they follow Jesus. They want to know “Who is the greatest person in the kingdom of heaven,” but they don’t realize they are looking at him face to face! Peter had been given the keys to the kingdom and two chapters later, James and John will come to Jesus with their mom and she asks if her two sons can sit in the places of honor in his kingdom. Jesus calls a child over and says, “Boys…yall need to be like this child and learn some humility.” It’s a great lesson for us today!

“Don’t judge me!” Have you ever heard those words before? That seems to be a huge statement coming from our society today when they are confronted with their lifestyle, with their sin. Are we to judge others? Doesn’t Jesus literally say the words, “Do NOT judge?” Yes he does but is that what he means? Are we supposed to confront sin or not? Are we supposed to tell other people how live or are we? The danger is the comparison game. We like to compare our sin with others and what we tend to forget that there is no scale in God’s eyes when it comes to sin. Sin is sin so does that mean we keep our mouths shut and let people live the way they choose? Listen to find out the answer to a deep topic…Judging.

The danger is the comparison game. We like to compare our sin with others and what we tend to forget that there is no scale in God’s eyes when it comes to sin. Sin is sin so does that mean we keep our mouths shut and let people live the way they choose? Listen to find out the answer to a deep topic…Judging.

Jesus tells the disciples a story about a Pharisee and a tax collector who are in the Temple together. Two opposite ends of the spectrum represented here. The Pharisee is bragging to God about how faithful he is and what all he has done to show his faithfulness. Then there is the tax collector who won’t even lift is head up as he is praying. He is beating his chest and asks God to have mercy on him because he is a sinner. Jesus said the tax collector was justified before God, not the Pharisee. Why? Because the Pharisee was trusting in himself, his deeds, while the tax collector was trusting God to save him. No matter how many good deeds we do, no matter how many accolades we collect over time, we cannot make it to heaven on our own. We have to rely on God and His Son, Jesus. We must learn some humility, drop our pride, and rely on the Savior to wash our sin away.

Janet Jackson released a song in 1986 with the title "What Have You Done For Me Lately" and that title sums up the attitude of many people today when it comes to helping meet the needs of other people. Or we say something like this, "If I do this for you, then what are you going to do for me?" Jesus has been invited to a dinner at a Pharisee's house and he is trying to get them to learn some humility. After talking to all that is in the room, being all rich and powerful Pharisees and other religious leaders, Jesus hones in on the host of the dinner and tells him he should invite the poor, blind, crippled, and the lame; those who cannot repay the host for meeting their needs. These are people they rejected and had nothing to do with even though they "loved" God and "served" Him faithfully. Jesus ministered to everyone, regardless of their income or their social status and he never asked anything in return from anyone. We can earn a great lesson from this Pharisee’s bad example if we pay attention.

As Jesus was talking to his disciples, there was a man who interrupted him. He said, “Jesus, my brother will not give me my part of the inheritance. Will you say something to him so he will?” The Bible is not a weapon for us to use to bully someone and get our way. When we can’t control or manipulate someone, the last thing we should do is try to use Jesus, or the bible, to get our way and that is what is going here. This guy in the crowd can’t get his way so he thought if Jesus told the brother to give his part of the estate to him, then the brother would surely listen to Jesus and do what is right! Right???!!! This is hardly ever the case. People that have hurt you or have sinned against you, they know what they did was wrong. No matter how many times you throw bible verses in their face, they aren’t going to listen and most likely will not apologize. This man was focusing on the wrong thing and that’s what Jesus wanted him to learn. Don’t focus on what others are doing or not doing, instead focus on what you, as a follower of Christ are doing or not doing. As we do that, we can ask God to take care of the situation as He sees fit!

Finishing up Luke 1 with some things to ponder:
Just because Zechariah talked with an angel and couldn’t talk any more after he didn’t believe Gabriel, he still continued his service to God in the temple.
• Do you remember a time that you had been praying for something for a long time and then the answer came?
• How did you feel? How did you react?
God came through with His promise…Elizabeth became pregnant.
• 2 Corinthians 1:20 For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.
Why did Elizabeth go into seclusion for five months?
• Elizabeth is a great example of humility and meekness.
Luke ends chapter 1 with a prophecy from Zechariah that talks about Jesus being the mighty savior and how John will prepare the way for the Messiah. He is probably holding the baby, looking down at him in his arms, and he says in vs76, “And you my little son, will be called the prophet of the Most High because you will prepare the way for the Lord. What a proud dad moment!
