Paul has just told the church in Corinth they are holy because they belong to Jesus. He then proceeds to tell them they have all the spiritual gifts they need as they are waiting for Jesus to return. We see these gifts mentions in chapter 12 and we will discuss these in more detail when we get there but we want you to know God has filled you with the Holy Spirit and through His Spirit, He has given you a gift to use to encourage others in the kingdom, to endure, and to bring God glory! What gift do you have to use? Are you using it? If not, why not?!?!?

This is the last chapter, of the last epistle, that will be coming from Paul as he is about to meet death when Nero has him beheaded. It is absolutely packed with some dynamic teaching as Paul urges Timothy to keep the fight going for Jesus, the gospel, and the kingdom of God. In the very first verse, we are challenged with some rich thoughts that Paul is writing in the very presence of God and Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead when Jesus comes to set up the kingdom of God. Sex sells and it’s everywhere. The enemy has taken something God designed between a husband and wife to enjoy, to procreate, and has twisted into something evil, sinful, that separates us from a Holy God. Even people who claim to follow Jesus have been duped by his deceitful scheme and, like a spider web, they have become entangled and wrapped up so tight they can’t escape. But they can if they are willing to do what Paul says and live a holy life that can only be found in Jesus. Those who have turned sex into an evil desire must return sex to the original design God had for it. Anything with sex outside a marriage bed is sinful and separates us from God. It was a struggle with the early church and has been a struggle since the fall of man in Genesis. Every time the bible talks about sin, the very first thing mentioned is a sexual sin and if we continue in it, we will not inherit the kingdom of God. We are called to be holy and the only way to be holy is to walk with Jesus. We can’t take a holy God with us and commit a sinful, sexual sin. We discuss it on today’s podcast.

Too many people in the church today want to hide. They would rather hide than get to work and Paul, as well as Jesus, makes it clear, we are to work for the kingdom! Paul even goes to say that God gives us the desire to work and to accomplish His will. Can we say that if a person doesn’t have that desire, then there is a disconnect in their relationship with God? YES! Just like Christmas lights that are connected to a power source yet half the lights aren’t working because one little bulb has a disconnect. After you carefully comb through the string of lights trying to figure out which one it is, you discover it, plug it correctly, and boom...the lights are working! Shine your light! Shine THE Light...Jesus! Put your hands to the plow and plant seed!

It's all about the seed...or the word of God. The word of God is powerful! It has nothing to do with us! All we are supposed to be concerned with is sowing and watering seed, or spreading the word of God into people's lives so fruit will be produced by God. Peter asked Jesus a question after the rich young man had walked away and Jesus said it would be hard for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven. He said, “We gave up everything. What will we get?” After answering Peter’s question, Jesus then gives a parable about an owner of a vineyard who continues to walk through town and hiring people to work at all times of the day. At the end of the day, those who were hired in the last hour got paid the same wage as those who started work in the early morning hours. Although it doesn’t seem fair to our human way of thinking, anybody that accepts the invitation from the owner of the vineyard gets paid the same…we get to enjoy spending eternity in heaven with God!

Episode 245: Matthew 18 Part 1 Competitive Egos and Humility

Men have huge egos and are very competitive. It was no different with the disciples! They were men who came from all kinds of backgrounds and occupations. The three that had special privileges, Peter, James, and John were commercial fishermen who competed in the fishing business to make a living and we’ll see this play out as they follow Jesus. They want to know “Who is the greatest person in the kingdom of heaven,” but they don’t realize they are looking at him face to face! Peter had been given the keys to the kingdom and two chapters later, James and John will come to Jesus with their mom and she asks if her two sons can sit in the places of honor in his kingdom. Jesus calls a child over and says, “Boys…yall need to be like this child and learn some humility.” It’s a great lesson for us today!

Episode 233: Matthew 13 Part 6 God Loves Catfish and Carp!

Jesus is talking to his disciples and he tells them a parable about a fishing net which had to catch their attention because some of them were commercial fishermen who used nets to catch fish for a living. He says a fisherman caught all kinds of fish in their nets and when the net was brought into the boat, the fish were separated—the good fish were kept and the worthless fish were trashed. Then he asked them, “Do you understand?” and they replied, “Yes.” Then he shifts his focus to the religious leaders who did not understand. They had the Old Testament scriptures, they heard Jesus’ teachings, they saw the miracles, but they would not accept Jesus, they rejected the kingdom of heaven. Like the disciples, they weren’t willing to give up everything and follow him. What about you?

Episode 222: Matthew 10 From Spectator to Participator

Jesus hand picked 12 men to be his closest disciples and in Matthew 10, we learn their names. Not only that, but we see Jesus giving them the authority to heal the sick and cast out demons as they go to the villages nearby and preach the kingdom of God has come. Up until this point they have been spectators but now they get to be participators! Jesus tells therm the harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few. Nothing much has changed 2000 years later. The harvest is still ready and the workers are still few and far between. Let's get to work!

Episode 194: Hebrews 13 Part 1 Make Us Like Jesus

The author encourages his readers by telling them we are receiving an unshakable kingdom and since we are receiving this unshakable kingdom, there are some things we need to do. In this episode we cover some of those things he says to do such as: 1) love one another as brothers and sisters in Christ, 2) show hospitality to strangers, 3) remember those in prison, 4) remember those who are being mistreated, 5) give honor to marriage, and 6) Don’t love money. Basically, the author is telling his readers to not be selfish and think about others, which is exactly what we should be doing as Christ followers because that is the example Jesus showed us!

Episode 159: Luke 19 Part 2 Looking For A Kingdom?!?!

Before Jesus leaves Jericho to continue to Jerusalem, he tells the crowd that continues to follow him a parable about a nobleman who was made king and he had ten servants that he gave some money to so they could invest it while he was gone and benefit the kingdom. Luke tells his readers why Jesus gave the crowd this parable, “He told them a story to correct the impression that the Kingdom of God would begin right away.” The Jews had already tried to make Jesus a king when he fed the 5,000, the problem was they had wrong expectations. Jesus didn’t come to set up an earthly kingdom, he didn’t come to deliver the Jews from the Roman oppression, his kingdom would be a spiritual one, one that would be in a whole different realm, a different place called heaven. Don’t be mistaken like the Jews, the kingdom is already here and you can be a part of it!

Episode 137: Luke 12 Part 4 Selfish or Selfless?

How do we know if the Kingdom of God is our top priority? How do we know that we are putting God first in our lives? Because we will be focused on others and not ourselves which is Jesus’ point to the man in the crowd that asked him to help get his inheritance from his brother. It’s all about focus. Where is yours? Is your focus on earthly things? Are you concerned with working a lot so you can buy more stuff? Or are you focused on heaven and pleasing God? If you say, “Heaven” then are you doing what Jesus said? How do we know if we are? Jesus said if we are focused on heaven then we will sell what we own and help meet other people’s needs. Are you selfish or selfless? As Luke 12 comes to an end Jesus tells his disciples to stay prepared. Prepared for what? His coming and his words still ring true. Keep your focus heavenward so you aren’t caught by surprise when the Groom returns for his bride!

Episode 124: Luke 8 Part 2 Parables Not Fables

Jesus began to teach the crowds in parables. The first parable Jesus tells is about a farmer who sawed seed and prepared for a harvest. The seed fell on different places such as footpaths, the rocks, the thorns, and on good, fertile soil. The thing about the seed is that it was always useful, even on the footpaths because it became birdseed. Jesus interprets the parable for his disciples and he explains the different types of soil and what happened to the seed. He then tells a parable about a light and how people put their lamps on a stand so the light will illuminate the room. Light reveals and that is great because we can see obstacles that would harm us if it was dark…like a Lego we were about to step on! We need to be fertile soil that produces fruit and we need to shine our light in a dark world so people will be able to find hope!

Episode 49: Acts 1 The Transition of Power

Jesus has died on the cross, was buried for three days, and came out of the tomb alive...just like he said he would do. He shows himself to his disciples several times in a forty day period to prove to them he is really alive and he wants them to try and grasp the concept of the kingdom. After those forty days were over he is talking with them on the Mount of Olives and he starts ascending into heaven! He gave hem a commandment before he left, "Wait...Wait for the promise of my Father and when the promise comes you will be my witnesses." The transition of power has taken place. The kingdom is now in the hands of the disciples!
