Let's face it...life sometimes is hard and can just suck. When we are faced with life's challenges we can be discouraged, get tired, and become weary. What we need is motivation, encouragement, and a helping hand that keeps us going. That's the idea of GRINDIT! We find our strength to endure when we focus on Jesus. God's own Son wasn't exempt from life's challenges and He didn't do anything to deserve what he went through! And yet He did...willingly, therefore we find our hope in Him.

When I hear the word “steward” I think of the people who work on airplanes that go up and down the aisles asking people if they want peanuts, a cookie, or some type of drink. They also have the job of making sure everyone follows the rules such as putting on our seatbelts as the plane is getting ready to take off. They “manage” the plane if you will. For a short time, the plane is a dwelling place full of people and the steward makes sure everything is in order. Paul says he, Apollos, Peter, and other who minister the gospel are simply stewards who must be faithful. Unseen, unheard, and faithful are three words to describe these men the Corinthian church are dividing over. Do those words describe us as we carry the gospel to others?

In many of his letters, Paul talks about how we are saved and he is clear: Not by our works but by God’s grace and His mercy. He talks about the Jews trying to convince the Gentiles they must also follow the law, including circumcision. The guy Paul is writing this letter to is a Gentile who is not circumcised which is living proof that God is moving in the lives of the uncircumcised Gentiles therefore, salvation has nothing to do with works. He tells Titus to not engage in any arguments with these people who insist on following the law, in fact, he tells Titus to warn them twice, and if they don’t listen, send them on their way and have nothing to do with them.

The church at Thessalonica has another concern about the return of Jesus so Paul writes a second letter to help them understand but in this letter, he causes confusion for us today! How? Because of what he says to them about the man of lawlessness and him being revealed some day; how this man will even sit in the temple of God! How can this happen when the Temple was destroyed by the Romans in AD 70 and no longer exists?!?! Did we miss the return of Jesus? Who is this man that will one day be revealed? Who will he deceive? We answer all of this in this podcast...

Paul calls the church at Galatia his “Dear Children” and then he says he feels as if he is going through labor pains over them again. Why would he say this? A man can’t have labor pains because a man cannot have children. What did Jesus say to Nicodemus in John 3? “Unless a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Paul has labored, his life threatened everywhere he went as he travels around spreading the gospel, telling people how be saved. Those that hear the gospel and are obedient, Paul calls them his “Children” because their new birth took place under his ministry. The re-birth process was hard but well worth it because when he gets results, there is joy just like when a newborn baby comes into the world. And now they are believing someone else’s teachings that is undermining everything he taught them and he says he is feeling those pains all over again.

Paul is explaining to the church at Galatia that they cannot have a relationship with God through following the law because the law puts them in bondage. He says, “As a child, we are under the elements of this world” meaning we grow up hearing the alphabet. The letters of the alphabet make certain sounds and that’s the way it is. You cannot change the alphabet or the sounds. You are in bondage to it, and just like us, Jesus came in bondage to the law meaning he had the choice to sin but he didn’t! He never sinned once and became our sacrifice so he could purchase our freedom. Now we are no longer under bondage to the law because we have freedom in Christ!

The law was good because it showed us what sin is however, it also held us captive because there wasn’t any way to be set free from the bondage of sin...that is...until the way of faith came. That way of faith has a name, Paul says, and his name is Jesus, or Yeshua which means, “God is Salvation.” When Jesus came, he came with the authority from God and he would say, “You have heard it said (the law), but I say to you...” and the people were amazed at his teaching and hius authority. Paul tells the church at Galatia, you have a choice to make. Yo have been taught about Jesus, you believed in Jesus, but now you are putting your trust in yourself by trying to be obedient to the law. You can continue down this path but it will not turn out well for you. You can quit trying yourself and put your faith in Jesus like you were taught from the beginning and be filled with the Holy Spirit so he can take care of everything for you and you’re guaranteed to be in with God. What’s your choice? Faith or your works?

Paul is upset with the church in Galatia because they have believed a false gospel. They have taken the faith they have put in God, in what Jesus has done for them on the cross, and put it in themselves, in their own works, their own righteousness because they are trying to win God’s approval by following the law. Paul says, “You already had God’s approval! How else do you think you were filled with the Holy Spirit? How do you think you were performing miracles?” It is because they had put their faith in God…just like Abraham.

James seems to contradict Paul in James 2 when Paul says in many places “We are saved by grace through faith and not of works...” I hear people say something like this all the time, “You don’t have to do anything to be saved...” and I believe they get that from what Paul says but this is not a true statement. Salvation is a gift from God, Right? When we receive a gift from someone, we have to do something...we have to receive that gift! James says if we aren’t doing something with our faith, if that faith isn’t producing actions in us and through us, then our faith is dead and useless. We throw away useless things. We bury dead things. The love Jesus has for us should be enough to allow good deeds to flow from us naturally. Do people see your good deeds? Or do you need to be buried?

Traditions...something the Pharisees had major problems with. They had studied God's law, interpreted God's law, and made their interpretations more binding than God's law! They had become traditions over the years and they were teaching them to the people in the synagogue instead of teaching the people about God and His law. Jesus gets to the "heart" of the mater...the Pharisee's hearts. They looked like they loved God, sounded like they loved God, but Jesus quotes Isaiah and says their hearts are far from God. Don't let your worship become tradition. Keep your heart in it and seeking after God!

Have you ever gotten in trouble for wearing a hat to the dinner table? Did someone smack it off your head and say something like this, “We don’t wear hats at the dinner table!” Why not? Who said? What’s the big deal about wearing a hat at the dinner table? The Pharisees were constantly challenging Jesus and his disciples with their beliefs…their traditions. They had their own interpretation of the law and they made them binding on the people which made it very difficult for the common person to serve God. There was very little grace and mercy. Jesus comes on the scene and says, “There’s an old way and a new way to serve God. It’s time y’all get with the new way and that only comes through me.” The Pharisees weren’t having it but if they wanted to be a part of the kingdom of God, they’d have to come around or be left out!

Paul is explaining to the Jews that they can not obtain salvation by keeping the law and doing works to earn it. If they want a relationship with God and be a part of His kingdom, then they must have faith in their Messiah, Jesus because he has done what the law could not do—forgive sin. In this chapter, Paul gives a great definition of grace: God’s undeserved kindness. The Jews thought they deserved everything they received from God because of the covenant He made with Abraham but Paul tells them differently. God doesn’t owe you anything but because of His kindness, His grace,, He has chosen you. Do you know that God has chosen you? He has! He loves you and wants to have a relationship with you but in order to have one, we have to accept the sacrifice He has provided through His Son, Jesus.

Paul is having a discussion with some Jews at the church in Rome and he is pleading with them to be saved, to give their lives to Jesus because that is the only way they are getting into the kingdom. He tells them they must call on his name and believe in their hearts which is something hard for them to do because many of the Jews see Jesus as a blasphemer and they will not dare mention his name much less put their faith in him! And Paul tells them they have “misdirected zeal” and the faith they are putting in the law needs to be directed to Jesus, their Messiah, who did what the law could never do…forgive them of their sin.

Can you imagine being taught something for thousands of years and all of a sudden, this cat comes along and says, “That’s the way yall used to do it, but not anymore. If you want to be a part of the kingdom, then you got to take part of a new covenant. That old one ain’t cutting it anymore. The new covenant between God and man is based off my body and my blood and you must accept my sacrifice and follow me. If not, you ain’t getting in.” This is difficult for many of the Jews because they thought Jesus was a blasphemer and they wouldn’t even speak his name in reverence for God! Here’s Paul saying, “You have to quit trusting the law God gave to Moses thousands of years ago and put your trust in Jesus because to get into the kingdom, you got to have faith, not works.”

When we speed down the road to fast, we get pulled over by a cop and they give us a ticket. Why? Because there is a law, it is right there in plain sight on a sign that says “Speed Limit 35”and we broke the law, therefore, we pay the consequences. We disagree with that law, we may be in a hurry and have a reason to drive faster than the law allows, but the law is there for a reason. God placed laws in the lives of the Jews way back in Genesis and they were given for a reason. The law showed them how God expects them to live so they can be holy like him. The problem is, they couldn’t do it! Not one person because of the power of sin. This is why Jesus, the only one who did keep the law of God perfectly, had to die and be our sacrifice. He set us free from the power of sin!

Paul is having a great discussion with the Jews at the church at Rome and he is trying to convince them that, just because they are Jews, that doesn't mean they are right with God. The covenant Goid made with Abraham will not save them nor will the law. The only way they can have a right relationship with God is through faith in Christ. Paul gives an example using Abraham, the father of the Jews, to show them the Abraham was not justified by works but by his faith in God! With works, salvation would be earned like a wage, but salvation is a gift of God that only comes through Jesus Christ.

One thing we do not like very much is people doing things for us, especially us men. We have a hard time admitting we even have a need and to watch someone just do something for us for no reason at all, it just gets all over us! And then we think we have to return the favor. Paul tells the Jews in his letter to the church at Rome that they can work until they drop but those works will never save them because the law cannot save. Salvation comes through Jesus and he has done everything we need for salvation. All we have to do is put our faith and trust in him! It doesn't matter what we do, we can never repay, or return the favor, for what Jesus has done for us. We just need to have faith in him and trust him!

Paul is having a long discussion with some Jews in his letter to the church at Rome who think, just because they are Jews, they are in good standing with God. They have the covenant with Abraham, they have the law given through Moses, and they are God's chosen people! Paul even tells them there some advantages to being a Jew but being a Jew will not save them. Paul tells them plainly that the law was given to reveal sin, it shows the entire world is guilty, and that we have no excuse for not turning to God.

Paul tells the Jews in Rome they are not in good standing with God just because they were born into a Jewish family and have cut their skin on their private part because of some covenant God made with Abraham. He tells them they may know the law well but if they don’t practice it, then it’s not doing them any good. In fact, Paul says the way to know if we are in good standing with God and have a relationship with Him is a changed heart! A changed heart can only come from God’s Holy Spirit! How do I know if I have a changed heart? Paul tells us: If we seek praise from people, then we don’t have a changed heart but if we seek praise from God, our hearts are changed…

Throughout the rest of Matthew 22, the Pharisees and the Sadducees try to stump Jesus and prove to everyone that he is not the Messiah as he claims. They send in some disciples along with some of Herod’s men and they get shamed. The Sadducees ask about the resurrection when they don’t even believe there is a resurrection! Jesus made them look foolish in front of the crowds and they were astonished by his answer. Then the Pharisees bring an expert in religious law to Jesus thinking he was smarter than Jesus and he could get. The job done. Wrong! Jesus answers his question and then takes the answer one step further because he knew the Pharisees weren’t following that commandment! After this attempt, they finally learn their lesson that, no matter how much wisdom they think they have, it’s no match for God’s and from this point on, they don’t ask Jesus any more questions. When are we going to learn our lesson?

Matthew 19 is a passage many people turn to because of the divorce issue that is brought up by the Pharisees. They are, once again, trying to trap Jesus, and their plan is to use the law of Moses, who was the authority of their religion, against Jesus. If Jesus didn’t answer correctly, then they have trapped him! But they didn’t get the answer they were hoping for. Jesus explains to them what God’s heart is about marriage but since the Pharisees weren’t after God’s heart, they didn’t want to hear it. They wanted justification to their selfish hearts’ desires which was more than likely, divorcing and remarrying the greener grass in their neighbor’s yard. They were looking for a way around the law; they didn’t want to be accused of adultery which is the seventh commandment of the ten commandments that they hang their hats on! Jesus lowers the boom when he tells them they have committed adultery if they divorce and remarry for any other reason than infidelity. And in doing so, Jesus exposes the real issue, their hearts.

Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up on a mountain where they witness something amazing—the Transformation of Jesus. The word in the Greek means metamorphosis which is what we see when a caterpillar turns into a butterfly. Jesus’ face shines as bright as the sun and his clothes are a brilliant white. Peter, bless his heart, tries to interrupt what was happening but God the Father overshadows the three disciples with a cloud and tells them, “This is My dearly loved Son who brings me great joy. Listen to him.” God the Father could have scolded Peter but He shows grace but in doing so, He gives affirmation to Jesus. Fathers, our children need our affirmation! They need to know, they need to hear from us, that we love them and they bring us great joy! Dads…go talk to your kids!

The Pharisees just don't seem to get it. Sparring with Jesus is not a good thing but this time they bring some help--some teachers of the law. Surely these bible thumpers can outsmart God Himself! Nope...They demand a sign to prove to them that Jesus' authority comes from God like he claims. Jesus tells them the only sign they'll get is the sign of Jonah, a prophet they'd be familiar with. He says just as Jonah was in the fish's belly for three days, the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth for three days. He was talking about his death, burial, and resurrection but they didn't understand that. Jesus tells them they have someone greater than Jonah but they refuse to repent and they have someone wiser than Solomon but they refuse to listen. God isn't sending you a sign when He has already sent His Son! You either believe or you don't!

What is the purpose of the law? What was the purpose of the prophets? Paul tells us in a couple of places the law was given so we would know what sin is. What is sin? Anything that goes against the will of God. The main purpose of the law and the prophets were to reveal the fact that we need a Savior...we need Jesus. As Jesus begins to teach his disciples about living a life pleasing to God he tells them that if their righteousness doesn't exceed that of the religious leaders and the Pharisees, they will not enter heaven! These are people who knew the law like the back of their hand. They looked the part, played the part, and people respected them greatly, but not Jesus. He saw their true nature, he saw their hearts. They may have been fooling the people around them but they didn't fool Jesus and he called them out, "These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far fro me." They head knowledge about the scriptures but their heart was far from God! What would Jesus say about us?

The author gets down to the nitty gritty and says, “This is my main point” and he goes on to say not only is Jesus better than angels, Moses, the law, a better High Priest, but this new covenant he established by his blood that was shed, is better than the old covenant. In fact, the author is so bold to say, “The old covenant is now obsolete!” When he is writing this letter, the Temple is still standing. The Temple was a better version of the tabernacle which was built for traveling since they were wondering in the wilderness for 40 years. David wanted to build God a permanent place to dwell and Solomon, his son, built the first Temple in Jerusalem. It was destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar and later rebuilt. This building was majestic, it was ginormous, and yet it is empty because God no longer resides there. Jesus, God’s Son, was the Messiah who came to fulfill the law and be our once and for all sacrifice. He is now sitting at the Father’s right hand in the place of honor, making intercession for us! Therefore, this new covenant God has established by the blood of Jesus, is better than the old covenant so why would we want to leave Jesus and go to an empty building? Stay with Jesus!

Jesus has begun to spar with the religious leaders. The Pharisees have heard enough about this guy and they begin to challenge Jesus quietly, yet Jesus would call them out publicly. They would ask a question in their head and Jesus would answer their question in front of the crowd so all could hear. In Luke 6 we have two more challenges between these two and both take place on a Sabbath Day, the day God set aside for rest and called it holy. The Pharisees are watching Jesus and his disciples every move trying to catch him breaking the law so they can discredit Jesus and they see his disciples breaking some grain, shucking it in their hand, and eating it because they were hungry. They immediately rush in and question the disciples and Jesus comes to their rescue using David, a king they had the utmost respect for, as an example to justify what was happening. But Jesus doesn't stop there; he adds "The Son of Man is Lord over the Sabbath." In other words, "I created the Sabbath, I created the very law that y'all study and teach, therefore I am greater than the Sabbath so we haven't done anything wrong here." As a follower of Jesus, be careful that you don't bind things on people bringing them oppression when Jesus wants to give them freedom!
