Let's face it...life sometimes is hard and can just suck. When we are faced with life's challenges we can be discouraged, get tired, and become weary. What we need is motivation, encouragement, and a helping hand that keeps us going. That's the idea of GRINDIT! We find our strength to endure when we focus on Jesus. God's own Son wasn't exempt from life's challenges and He didn't do anything to deserve what he went through! And yet He did...willingly, therefore we find our hope in Him.

The religious leaders thought they were bold and courageous but as we see Jesus march into Jerusalem and expose them for who they really are, cowards, the one who is actually bold and courageous shows out, Jesus. He has went to the Temple, cleansed it out by overturning the money tables and driving the people out that was selling the animals for sacrifices for profit, and now he tells a story about an owner of a vineyard who sent servants in to gather some of the crops and money but the hired tenants killed them, including the owner’s son! Jesus was talking about them and they knew it and they wanted to kill him but they feared the crowd. Jesus challenges the Pharisees and the Sadducees in chapter 12, then uses a widow lady that threw 2 coins in the offering plate to show what the heart of God really looks like!

Why do followers of Jesus think it is their responsibility to be spiritual police and go around condemning the lost of their sin? They go to places where people who do not follow Christ and act just like them with megaphones and signs, even carrying their bibles and shouting scriptures as if anyone is listening. Jesus gives a parable of the wheat and weeds in Matthew 13 and he even gives us the interpretation of the parable. It is clear in this parable that, as a follower of Christ, a disciple of Jesus, we have ONE job! That ONE job is to share the gospel of Christ, the death, burial. And resurrection of Jesus; a message of hope so that people will have an opportunity to say YES, their sins can be forgiven, and they can be a part of the kingdom of God. As workers for Jesus, our responsibility is NOT the harvest! The harvest is the angels responsibility and they will separate the wheat from the weeds. Our ONE job is to share Jesus so get to work!

Matthew shifts his focus from the religious leaders and Pharisees to some of Jesus’ teachings. He tells us that Jesus used stories called parables. He used things that his listeners would be familiar with such as seed, soil, coins, etc. to teach them a spiritual lesson. Many people today do not read the bible for themselves because they feel as though it is too hard to understand but Jesus said if we would listen to his teachings, God would give understanding. If you’re not reading and studying the word of God for yourself, you are having to take what someone else says and that can be very dangerous! How do you know if you are being deceived or not if you don’t know what the bible says?!?!? Get in the book and start reading!

Jesus gives three parables to the crowd trying to help them visualize what the kingdom of heaven is like. He uses a mustard seed that is a very small seed yet when planted, it grows into a huge tree that birds use to build their nests in. Then he uses yeast. Yeast is a catalyst that makes dough rise. In these two examples it took something that seemed insignificant to many and it became something great and it took someone to work to get it going. In the third example Jesus uses a house with a narrow door. The Master closes the door at some point and locks it leaving people outside the house and they are looking in the windows as they beg for to be let in but it is too late. The Master said he doesn’t know them and they aren’t welcomed in his house and they are turned away forever. We all have a choice to make: to follow Jesus or reject him. What’s your choice?

Jesus began to teach the crowds in parables. The first parable Jesus tells is about a farmer who sawed seed and prepared for a harvest. The seed fell on different places such as footpaths, the rocks, the thorns, and on good, fertile soil. The thing about the seed is that it was always useful, even on the footpaths because it became birdseed. Jesus interprets the parable for his disciples and he explains the different types of soil and what happened to the seed. He then tells a parable about a light and how people put their lamps on a stand so the light will illuminate the room. Light reveals and that is great because we can see obstacles that would harm us if it was dark…like a Lego we were about to step on! We need to be fertile soil that produces fruit and we need to shine our light in a dark world so people will be able to find hope!
