Let's face it...life sometimes is hard and can just suck. When we are faced with life's challenges we can be discouraged, get tired, and become weary. What we need is motivation, encouragement, and a helping hand that keeps us going. That's the idea of GRINDIT! We find our strength to endure when we focus on Jesus. God's own Son wasn't exempt from life's challenges and He didn't do anything to deserve what he went through! And yet He did...willingly, therefore we find our hope in Him.

Paul left Timothy in Ephesus to confront some issues the church was having and we dig into all of these issues looking at what we know about the church given to us in scripture. Timothy was a young man that Paul had converted to Jesus and he had traveled with Paul on his journeys as he started new churches and visited churches he established in the past. Timothy would be a little intimidated by what he was given to do and Paul offers him these three things: grace, mercy, and peace. Three things that are much needed today as we confront sin in the church and false doctrine, because these things stem from one place—an enemy that wants to stir up strife, chaos, confusion—an enemy who wants to divide the kingdom of God to weaken it. That is why it is imperative to keep our eyes on Jesus and not on one another!

Paul ends his letter like he started it, by telling the church, “May the God of grace give you peace...at all times...in every situation. The church at Thessalonica has gone through severe persecution since it started and they have lost loved ones because of it. They have to wonder what is coming next...Will they make it through the next day? Will they make it through the night? Are they going to get beaten before they get home from work or while they are out shopping? We may not be undergoing persecution like the church at Thessalonica, but we all face something in life that is difficult. As we do, our prayer is the same as Paul’s...may the God of grace give you peace at all times, in every situation.

When we “put on Jesus”, we put on all these things Paul mentions in chapter 3, tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. We are commanded to be like Jesus in everything we say and do, how we live, and Paul says we are to give God permission to work in our lives which means we must allow Him to chip away at the stone walls we have built around our hearts because someone has hurt us or wronged us in some way. Forgiveness is not an option, it is a must and Jesus is our greatest example. He was beaten beyond recognition, humiliated in public, and as he hung on the cross in pain and trying to breath with those who are looking at him denying him and challenging him, he simply says with the breath he could muster, “Father, forgive them...” Who do you need to forgive? Free yourself from that bondage...Jesus forgave you...you can forgive as well.

Paul says he has learned to be content in any situation he finds himself in? What does that mean? The dictionary defines it as being happy and having peace no matter what but is that what Paul means? Not hardly...Happiness depends on outside circumstances. If the outside circumstances are good, then I’m happy but if not, well then, I’m either mad, sad, worried, or some other emotion. Interestingly enough, God is not concerned about our “Happiness” but He is concerned about us and he knows that outside circumstances will affect us and make us like a rollercoaster. But...that doesn’t have to be the case! We can be, like Paul, to learn to be “content”! No matter what the outside circumstances are, we can be at peace because we have Jesus.

Be anxious for nothing, but pray about everything and tell God what you need. But doesn’t God already know what we need before we ask? That’s what Jesus said! So why pray? Because we can verbalize what we need, which is admitting, “God, I can’t do this (fill in the blank) on my own and I need you.” When we try to take control of things, we make a huge mess of it and it can cause all kinds of anxiety. We think it must be done yesterday and we have to have it NOW! But God doesn’t work on our time table, He isn’t bound by any time frame, but He does care about our needs and He wants to supply those needs and be glorified in our lives. God creates something from nothing so I’m sure He can provide whatever we need so quit worrying and put your faith in God!

One of Paul’s big themes in all his letters is unity. He knows if the enemy gets the smallest chance to cause division and break the unity, he will take it and blow it up into something ginormous! There were two women who had some issues between one another and Paul tells them to work it out and get to work for Jesus! He said they worked very hard in the past to spread the gospel with him and others, but since there is this riff, the work isn’t getting done. It has caused a problem within the church and there needs to be peace. So he urges the church to help these two ladies work it out and find peace. Do you need peace? What do you need to work out in your life and who do you need to make peace with for the sake of the gospel advancing?

How do we want to be known? People today are so angry and ready to fly off the handle at the drop of a hat, especially if they are involved with an organization with a bunch of letters in it. Think about it...most of thew time when they are shown on the news, what are they doing? Yelling...Why? Because they are angry! We see them going into stores and wreaking havoc, destroying everything and anything they can get their hands on...Why? Because they are angry! Do we want to be known as someone who stays angry and mad all the time or do we want to be known as loving, caring, compassionate, etc... If we want to reflect Jesus and be his hands and feet, then we have to be SLOW to anger, slow to speak...why? Because when we are angry, we say things we don’t mean and we tearing people down by our words. He says, “Be quick to listen...” What would happen if we opened our ears and kept our mouths shut?

Jesus enters Jerusalem riding a donkey. Why did he choose a donkey and not a horse? Kings who were coming ready for war rode a horse. Kings who were coming in peace rode a donkey. Jesus is called the “Prince of Peace” and he has been peaceful since the beginning. However, after entering Jerusalem, he goes to the Temple and isn’t so peaceful as he wreaks havoc on those selling animals to make sacrifices. He overturns their money tables and releases the animals while scolding the religious leaders because of their hard hearts. On the way to the Temple he had cursed a fig tree and it withered from the roots of. It’s a picture of the state of Jerusalem who has rejected the very Messiah that has come to deliver them.

What is your ambition? What motivates you? Paul talks to the church in Rome about being filled with the Holy Spirit and allowing his joy and peace to bring confidence. The closer we are to God, the more confident we become in Him and He uses us for his glory. But we must be willing to allow Him to use us! Paul was consistently being used by God and yet he would be careful to give God all the glory and boast about how Jesus was working through him. This should be our aim, for Jesus to use us and that our lives would reflect him on a daily basis. Lord, give us the confidence we need in You!

Paul has taken on the difficult task of trying to unify the church in Rome which is made up of Gentiles and Jews, two sets of people who didn't like each other for hundreds of years who are now worshiping together. It seems they had asked him some opinions about some certain matters and he replied back pointing them toward Jesus and he mentions something specific toward the middle of the chapter...he prays that God, the source of hope, will fill them completely with joy and peace, then they will flow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. As we grow closer to Christ, may we have this confidence!

The first two verses of chapter 5 are so powerful and are life changing. If you are facing trials and storms in life, these two verses are for you! Paul tells us that through faith in Jesus, we have confidence and joy because we will share in God’s glory. We will be in the presence of God someday and will enjoy everything that heaven has to offer! This hope should bring peace, confidence, and joy and should help us endure the trials we face in this life. It’s an undeserved privilege that we get to enjoy because of what Jesus did for us on the cross, the sacrifice he made on our behalf, if, and only if, we put our faith in him.

He tells them to work on two things: 1) work at living in peace with everyone, 2) and work at living holy. Then he gives them, and us, a recipe on how to live a faithful life:

2. Please God by worshiping Him.

Paul is going to hang out in Ephesus for at least two years preaching the gospel and giving the people hope. Luke writes that God gave Paul the ability to perform unusual miracles, so unusual that when a handkerchief that he owned touched a sick person, they were completely healed...immediately! As he continues to convert people to Jesus, the worship of false gods along with their idols begins to decline. With the decline of idols means a decline in the bank accounts of the silversmiths that make the idols. They stir up a mob and a lot of chaos against Paul as well as the local believers. They gather in the amphitheater, they have no idea why they are there, and they are yelling random things. It's what the enemy does; He causes chaos and confusion to distract and discourage. God is opposite. God is not the author of confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33); He is a God of peace. What is your life filled with? Confusion or peace?
