Let's face it...life sometimes is hard and can just suck. When we are faced with life's challenges we can be discouraged, get tired, and become weary. What we need is motivation, encouragement, and a helping hand that keeps us going. That's the idea of GRINDIT! We find our strength to endure when we focus on Jesus. God's own Son wasn't exempt from life's challenges and He didn't do anything to deserve what he went through! And yet He did...willingly, therefore we find our hope in Him.

Paul leaves Timothy in Ephesus so he could help the elders and the church in Ephesus to fight against false teachers and help them get back on track with the will of God. In chapter 2, Paul begins giving Timothy some instructions that will help him fight the battles and keep his conscience clear. In today’s podcast, we break down two of the four things that Paul instructs Timothy to do on behalf of all men and women, kings, and all of those who are in authority. He tells Timothy these four things are also pleasing to God. The church today would greatly benefit from these four things if they would be obedient!

<itunes:subtitle>Is anyone "devoted" today? What about "devoted" to prayer?</itunes:subtitle>

What does it mean to be “devoted” to something? I remember when I was a kid, sports players were “devoted” to a team. They played with one team their whole career. I don’t know of any player today that can say that because they follow the money. Whoever pays the most is where they go. To be “devoted” to something means you endure, you continue, even when things get hard. You don’t quit. Paul tells the church at Colosse to “devote” themselves to prayer and be watchful, with thanksgiving in their hearts. He is telling them to pray with expectation and to thank God for what is He is going to do when He answers their prayer! But if there is a delay, if the answer doesn’t come as fast as you think it should, if the hardship continues, don’t give up...keep grinding!

How many people have prayed and got nothing from God but crickets? They prayed with no response or get the response they didn’t want? They get discouraged and quit praying, reading their bibles, they no longer show up for services, and the next thing you know, they don’t want anything to do with God at all. Why does God not answer our every beckoning call? Doesn’t He know we are in trouble? In a pinch? Desperate?!?! Yes! Yes He does and He hears every prayer you have prayed and He does care. I don’t know why God chooses to answer and not to answer prayers...but this I do know...He is sovereign and without Him, we don’t have any hope! Hang on, keep grinding, DO NOT GIVE UP!

When you tell someone you’re going to pray for them...DO IT! Right then and there...Don’t wait until later because you may forget! My own daughter who is in high school has told me how people would say to her they would pray for her but she knew they wouldn’t, that they were just being nice. Epaphras was a prayer warrior, he was an intercessor on behalf of the church at Colosse as well as other churches. Paul says he literally wrestled with the enemy when he prayed. I want someone like that praying on my behalf! That’s how we should be as the body of Christ! Wrestling with the enemy, fighting for one another, pushing back darkness so we can have victory!

Be anxious for nothing, but pray about everything and tell God what you need. But doesn’t God already know what we need before we ask? That’s what Jesus said! So why pray? Because we can verbalize what we need, which is admitting, “God, I can’t do this (fill in the blank) on my own and I need you.” When we try to take control of things, we make a huge mess of it and it can cause all kinds of anxiety. We think it must be done yesterday and we have to have it NOW! But God doesn’t work on our time table, He isn’t bound by any time frame, but He does care about our needs and He wants to supply those needs and be glorified in our lives. God creates something from nothing so I’m sure He can provide whatever we need so quit worrying and put your faith in God!

Paul is constantly encouraging the church at Philippi by affirmation. He goes on and on about how he appreciates them, their support, hard work, and prayers. Then he talks about how often he prays for them and how he appreciates them praying for him since he has been in jail. We all need to affirmation, which is why it is so important for the church to be involved in one another's life, encouraging each other as we wait for our eternal home and one huge way we can help encourage one another is by praying for one another and telling each other they are appreciated!

Have you prayed and prayed and prayed only to get nothing but crickets from God? No matter how earnest you pray, all you seem to get from God is silence? A question people ask a lot is, “Why are my prayers not being answered?” It’s a great question because Jesus tells us to ask God for help and to bring our petitions before Him so He can answer them, but maybe you’re discouraged because you feel as though God doesn’t hear you or that He cares. He does both! He hears you and He cares!!! The reason your prayers may not be answered is because you aren’t walking in your calling! Paul discusses that here in chapter 4, that we are to walk worthy in the manner we are called. We are called to live different from the world and he gives four examples of how we should walk. If any one of them are out of line, not in the will of God, it could possibly hinder our prayers! How are you walking?

James has been hammering the rich and addressing the poor but at the end of his letter he is pulling them all together and saying, “We are one and it’s time to act like it.” Then he goes through a series of “You” questions... If any of you...then...and he gives a solution to each one. He had just said we should be patient waiting for the Lord’s return and now he says while we wait, act like this. One thing James mentions specifically is the sick should call for the elders of the church to pray for them and they will be healed by their prayer in faith because the Lord will heal them! We either believe that or we don’t and the way most churches operate today, we don’t! God hasn’t changed at all so what’s the problem? We are. We want to be in control and as long as we are in control, God cannot work. It’s been James’ message from the beginning...Seek God and His wisdom, and let Him have control.

A trickle a day won't grow a plant. It must be watered daily. Why do we think we can have a relationship with God with just a trickle here and there? We have to be in the word, praying, communicating with God every day, several times a day! What kind of relationship would yo have with your spouse or friend if there was barely any communication? Jesus desires to have an intimate relationship with us, to spend quality time with us and if we want to grow our faith, we must spend time with him, communicating regularly with him!

When trouble comes, we are to run to God and ask Him for wisdom on how to get through it, and not doubt His direction. But far too often people do doubt God, in fact, when a storm comes in their life, they get mad at God, blame Him for everything, and return to a sinful life. That’s exactly what Satan wants! He tries to discourage us with many things so our focus will get off God and on to whatever troubles us. Then temptations come and, if we give, brings separation, like Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. That is why it is crucial that we are in the word every day and that we are praying many times a day! No matter the social scale or our bank account, troubles, trials, testing’s, and temptations will come. Not only will they come, but death will come at some point too and the only thing that will matter when we take our last breath is: Did I know Jesus as my Lord and Savior? Was I living for him and not myself?

When our world is upside down and it seems like chaos is all we deal with, when it seems like we can’t catch a break because life is kicking our butt, James says, “Ask God for wisdom.” He has already told his readers that troubles will come, and now he says, “When trouble comes, ask God for wisdom.” For someone to have wisdom, they have to experience something, then, once on the other side of the storm, they have dealt with the issue, they have endured, and now they can help others who are facing similar situations. God knows what it’s like to lose a son, he knows what it’s like to watch a family member go through so much pain, he knows what it’s like to watch a child be bullied, beaten, and killed. God knows what we deal with on a daily basis and he can help because he has been through it, he has experience, he is full of wisdom, and James says God will give it liberally if we ask...AND not waver, or doubt. If life is freaking out and you can’t figure things out or you’re wondering how you’re going to make it, run to God and ask him for wisdom, ask him for help, trust him with everything you have, and he will direct your path!

Some of the disciples were trying to cast a demon out of a little boy but couldn’t get the job done. Jesus comes down the mountain and hears some arguing and wants to know what is going on. After hearing the explanation, he says, “You faithless generation, how long do I have to put up with you?” Who is he talking to? The dad? The kid? The religious leaders? The crowd? Or his disciples? So many times, when we pray for someone to be healed and nothing happens, we blame the recipient and say something like, “They don’t have enough faith.” But is this true? Is the recipient the one to blame? The answer may surprise you because Jesus is actually blaming the disciples here, the givers! They have a lack of faith which is crazy because they have seen miracles and performed them as well!

How many times have you prayed and got nothing but crickets? It seemed as if God was silent and you pray and you pray some more, only to give up because you think God doesn't care since He isn't answering...Did you know Jesus had unanswered prayers?!?! He sure did...in the Garden of Gethsemene. He told his disciples he was grieved to the point of death and then he went and prayed three times that God would come up with another way to get our sins forgiven. All Jesus got from God was crickets...Did he quit? No...He knew what God's plan was and he followed through with it bearing great pain and agony for you and me, so our sins can be forgiven and we could have a relationship with God!

Have you ever prayed for something and just got crickets from God? Nothing but silence? What did you do? Give up? Quit praying? That’s what most people do and they tend to get mad at God because they feel as if He doesn’t care. But the problem is not God, it’s us! We give up too soon and too easily! Jesus says to “Keep on asking, keep on seeking, and keep on knocking” and he tells God will come through! That is a promise and we shouldn’t doubt God…but far too many times we do! We don’t get an answer quick enough and we just quit asking, quit seeking, and quit knocking. We simply give up and move on when God is saying to us, “Have faith, trust Me, the answer is on the way…Hold on!” We need to encourage one another to keep the faith and not give up!

The whole purpose of the Sermon on the Mount as we call it, was to tell his disciples how to live a life that exceeds the righteousness of the Pharisees. During his teaching, Jesus tells his disciples how to give, pray, and fast, and then he expands on the prayer part as he gives them a “model” prayer. In this episode of the GRINDIT podcast we break down this prayer so we too, can know how to pray and to have our prayers answered. Take a listen and share this with a friend!

Jesus talks to his disciples about prayer so he uses a story about a widow who wanted justice toward her enemy and an judge who didn’t fear God nor does he care anything about people. He keeps refusing to listen to the widow but she is persistent. Instead of giving up, she continues to nag the judge until finally he gives in and she gets justice. Jesus said the judge finally gave in because the widow was getting on his nerves. Then Jesus tells his disciples that God will surely give justice to his chosen people who cry out to him day and night. He asks, “Will he keep putting them off?” Then he answers, “I tell you, he will grant justice to them quickly!” Though it may not always seem like it, God knows what we are going through, and it may seem like He doesn’t care or He is nowhere around, but He is right by our side the whole time. Nothing catches God by surprise and He knows every tear that falls from our eyes. And if we are persistent like this widow and continue to ask God for help, He will come through in His time.

How often do you pray? Every day? Once in a while? Only when trouble comes your way? When you are desperate? Jesus was constantly going off alone to spend some time with the Father in prayer. Prayer is how we communicate with God, it’s us having a conversation with Him. The disciples have watched Jesus do this for so long and they noticed there’s something special about the time Jesus spends with the Father so they came to him and said, “Teach us how to pray…” Prayer is critical in our daily walk with God and if we aren’t praying, our relationship is suffering just like our earthly relationships do between souses, friends, and loved ones. If there isn’t much communication, then the relationship is weak and it dwindles away. If there is strong communication, then the relationship is strong. God wants a strong relationship with you and me and He is waiting to have a conversation so start talking! And as you talk, just like in any good conversation, you have to listen! Jesus tells his disciples how they should pray to the Father and we can do the same today…

Jesus spars with the Pharisees and the teachers of the law again on the Sabbath Day when he heals a man’s withered hand in the synagogue. It was at this point that Jesus became known as an “enemy” to the Pharisees and all of the religious leaders. From this time on they would try to come up with a plan to get rid of this man who claims to be from God. After this, Jesus then goes up on a mountain alone to spend some time with the Father praying and Luke says he prayed all night long. What’s the longest prayer you have said? How much time do you spend with God? Do you have a relationship with God, with Jesus, or is He a friend? An acquaintance? When we have a relationship with someone, we spend quality time with them and there is great communication. We only spend a little time with friends or with someone we consider an acquaintance and there is little communication. Think about how much time you spend with God in prayer, reading His word, worshiping Him in a week’s time, on a daily basis…Again, do you have a relationship with God or is He more of an acquaintance?

Why do we worry so much? Why do we panic and stress over so many things? Peter has been arrested, he knows that James, the brother of John, has been beheaded and unless the Lord intervenes he will meet the same fate in just a few days! But when Luke turns the spotlight on Peter as he is in prison waiting for Passover to be over with so he can have his trial we find Peter sound asleep as he is chained to two guards. He was in such a deep sleep that the bright light from the appearance of the angel didn't even wake him up! We say we trust the Lord but do we really?

As they are about to leave for the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus will be betrayed, he concludes his talk with his disciples by saying a prayer on their behalf. He knows his time has come and he will be leaving them to take over the kingdom so he tells his Father that the disciples have heard his message and believe. Therefore, since they will be taking over the kingdom and helping it grow, Jesus asks the Father to protect them.
