John’s disciples say, “We fast like the religious leaders, so why do your disciples not fast?” It’s almost as if they are asking, “Since you are the Messiah as John has told us, since you are the standard of righteousness and holiness, then why are you not teaching or making your disciples fast?” as if fasting was a standard of holiness and to some, like the religious leaders, it was. They made a huge ordeal when they were fasting and how often they fasted. But what they didn’t know is there is a bigger picture, one they don’t see nor understand. Jesus uses a Jewish wedding to paint them the picture and how he has everything under control. The hatred for the very Messiah they were looking for is simply atrocious! They come up with several lies and present them as truth which is what the enemy does. After Pilate realized Jesus was a Galilean, he has him sent to Herod. Even there, the religious leaders make their false accusations hoping Herod would have him crucified but he is more interested in seeing a miracle and making a mockery of Jesus. He is sent back to Pilate and Pilate was going to flog him, then release him but the crowd got involved and started shouting they wanted Jesus killed! Pilate, as a true politician, gives the crowd their way and hands Jesus over to the religious leaders to be crucified. They are watching the religious leaders throw their money in the offering plate and then they begin to inspect the Temple itself. It was full of gold and silver with fancy carvings in the huge stones that weighed tons. The Temple was majestic and there was no other building like it in that day. Jesus tells them, "Guys, this building, as huge as it is, will be destroyed and there will not be one stone left on top of another." It blew their minds! How can this be? When will it happen? Jesus then answers their question and in this episode we look at a first hand witness to the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple in AD 70 by the Romans. It happened just as Jesus said it would. When Jesus died on the cross, the veil of this Temple was torn in half signifying we now have direct access to God through Jesus. We don't need anyone to go to God on our behalf! They are going to send some guys in and pretend to be interested in his teachings and when they get the opportunity, they will ask a question that would surely get Jesus to stumble because if he answered a certain way, they could run to the Roman authorities and get him in trouble. However, their scheme failed again because what they didn’t realize is, they had no authority over Jesus whatsoever and if he wanted to, he could speak one word and they would be dead but instead, Jesus showed mercy and he was longsuffering toward them. Why? He was hoping they would see the truth and follow him. The next day they are called in for questioning and the religious leaders try to intimidate them but since they were filled with the Holy Spirit, they were confident and were bold. They told the religious leaders that they had crucified Jesus but God raised him back to life and made him the Cornerstone. The religious leaders tried to use their power and shut the apostles up by telling them they cannot preach or teach in the name of Jesus any more which is why I titled this episode, "Shut Your Face!" The apostles continued to share Jesus with anyone who was willing to listen. They said they would rather obey God. And listen to what the religious leaders had to say about these two men, "They realized they had been with Jesus..."
