Let's face it...life sometimes is hard and can just suck. When we are faced with life's challenges we can be discouraged, get tired, and become weary. What we need is motivation, encouragement, and a helping hand that keeps us going. That's the idea of GRINDIT! We find our strength to endure when we focus on Jesus. God's own Son wasn't exempt from life's challenges and He didn't do anything to deserve what he went through! And yet He did...willingly, therefore we find our hope in Him.

Does God call us? Do we call on God? Is salvation only up to God or do we play a role? Where does baptism fit in that scenario? Does baptism even fit? Does it matter when it comes to salvation? Is the only thing we have to do is to confess Jesus and believe in our heart? We tackle these question in this episode.

How many times have you heard something like this, “You don’t have to do anything to be saved. Only believe.” I agree one hundred percent salvation is through faith in Christ given to us by his marvelous grace, but I am not sold on the “you don’t have to do anything” bit because if you are believing, you are doing something and Paul tells Timothy many things in chapter 2 that he must do in order to remain strong in his faith in Christ. In vs15 Paul tells Timothy to “work hard” and “be a good worker” so that he will “receive God’s approval.” James says that faith without works is dead. Most of this type of teaching came from a few people in the late 1500 to early 1600s. Believe what you will, but if I were you, I’d stick with the truth of God’s word over man’s opinion, especially when eternity is at stake!

What does Paul mean when he says there are some that have shipwrecked their faith and have violated their conscience? What were the consequences of the actions of Hymenaeus, Alexander, and in chapter 2, Philetus? Paul says he threw them out and turned them over to Satan! What does that mean? How can someone who is saved by Jesus, filled with the Holy Spirit, belong to Satan? Are they still saved? Can one be led by their flesh and not the Spirit and still make it to heaven and be with Jesus for eternity?

Paul says to the church at Galatia, “Christ has set you free” and “You have been called to live in freedom.” Over ten times in this letter, Paul uses some form of the word “freedom”. What does Paul mean by “freedom”? If we only have true freedom in Jesus, then what about those who are outside of Christ? They are in bondage, but so are those who are trying to follow the law or work their way to salvation. Why would anybody choose bondage after being set free?

We hear people say, “Salvation is free” or “Salvation is a free gift from God and all you have to do is receive it.” That is true in a way but our salvation wasn’t free...it cost Jesus everything. He willingly gave his life as a ransom, a payment, for our sin so that we could go free. Paul says he was born under the law, which made him subject to it, but he chose not to sin, yet he became sin when he hung on the cross. He was persecuted, hated, despised, rejected, beaten, crucified, buried, and came out alive holding the keys to death and hell...and he calls us his children...if...we have given our lives to him and been clothed with him, receiving his Spirit in our hearts! Have you?

The law was good because it showed us what sin is however, it also held us captive because there wasn’t any way to be set free from the bondage of sin...that is...until the way of faith came. That way of faith has a name, Paul says, and his name is Jesus, or Yeshua which means, “God is Salvation.” When Jesus came, he came with the authority from God and he would say, “You have heard it said (the law), but I say to you...” and the people were amazed at his teaching and hius authority. Paul tells the church at Galatia, you have a choice to make. Yo have been taught about Jesus, you believed in Jesus, but now you are putting your trust in yourself by trying to be obedient to the law. You can continue down this path but it will not turn out well for you. You can quit trying yourself and put your faith in Jesus like you were taught from the beginning and be filled with the Holy Spirit so he can take care of everything for you and you’re guaranteed to be in with God. What’s your choice? Faith or your works?

In the same way....that’s how Paul put’s it to the church at Galatia. What is he talking about? In the same way, “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.” Abraham believed God just like you did...by faith. He didn’t receive anything in his own effort. In fact, Abraham struggled when he didn’t trust God! He was fearful of dying when he was traveling through foreign land so he lied and said Sarah was his sister. Abraham was willing to let his wife be taken by another man just so he could live! Can you say, “Epic Fail!” Salvation comes from our faith in Jesus, not our own efforts.

James seems to contradict Paul in James 2 when Paul says in many places “We are saved by grace through faith and not of works...” I hear people say something like this all the time, “You don’t have to do anything to be saved...” and I believe they get that from what Paul says but this is not a true statement. Salvation is a gift from God, Right? When we receive a gift from someone, we have to do something...we have to receive that gift! James says if we aren’t doing something with our faith, if that faith isn’t producing actions in us and through us, then our faith is dead and useless. We throw away useless things. We bury dead things. The love Jesus has for us should be enough to allow good deeds to flow from us naturally. Do people see your good deeds? Or do you need to be buried?

Paul is having a discussion with some Jews at the church in Rome and he is pleading with them to be saved, to give their lives to Jesus because that is the only way they are getting into the kingdom. He tells them they must call on his name and believe in their hearts which is something hard for them to do because many of the Jews see Jesus as a blasphemer and they will not dare mention his name much less put their faith in him! And Paul tells them they have “misdirected zeal” and the faith they are putting in the law needs to be directed to Jesus, their Messiah, who did what the law could never do…forgive them of their sin.

Because the sin of one man, Adam, we are still reaping the consequences to this day. People are dying every day, a separation occurs. Our loved ones leave us and pass on into eternity and it brings sorrow because we miss them. But even greater than this, Jesus, the second Adam, has brought hope, he has brought salvation by dying himself and conquering the power and grip of death. Because of Adam’s sin, we were born into sin and are all sinners but Paul makes it clear that through the second Adam, Jesus, and his sacrifice, our sins are forgiven and our relationship with the Father is restored. Every person, no matter what they have done, no matter what sin they commit, can have partake of this gift by putting their faith in Jesus!

Paul is having a great discussion with the Jews at the church at Rome and he is trying to convince them that, just because they are Jews, that doesn't mean they are right with God. The covenant Goid made with Abraham will not save them nor will the law. The only way they can have a right relationship with God is through faith in Christ. Paul gives an example using Abraham, the father of the Jews, to show them the Abraham was not justified by works but by his faith in God! With works, salvation would be earned like a wage, but salvation is a gift of God that only comes through Jesus Christ.

One thing we do not like very much is people doing things for us, especially us men. We have a hard time admitting we even have a need and to watch someone just do something for us for no reason at all, it just gets all over us! And then we think we have to return the favor. Paul tells the Jews in his letter to the church at Rome that they can work until they drop but those works will never save them because the law cannot save. Salvation comes through Jesus and he has done everything we need for salvation. All we have to do is put our faith and trust in him! It doesn't matter what we do, we can never repay, or return the favor, for what Jesus has done for us. We just need to have faith in him and trust him!

When the 72 disciples came back to Jesus they reported everything God had done through them and they were so excited because demons didn’t stand a chance against the name of Jesus! Jesus was moved by their excitement and was filled with joy but he tells them, “Don’t rejoice because evil spirits obey you; rejoice because your names are registered in heaven.” Miracles are awesome but the Miracle Worker is the greatest ever! So many churches, so many Christians today are looking for miracles when we should be looking for the miracle worker Jesus and drawing close to him. And that is the message Jesus had for those disciples! Rejoice, not in the miracles, but that your names are registered in heaven! We may never see a miracle but we definitely see the miracle worker some day! Is your name registered in heaven so you can stay with the miracle worker, Jesus, for eternity?

I own six guitars, a mandolin, a banjo, and a six piece drum set. I'm in my room with them when I'm at home and not once, since I have owned them, have they made a sound unless I pick the strings or beat the drums with some sticks! Guitars have to be played to make sounds! I bought my kids a guitar to learn on and they just sat in their room and was never touched. I even put some new strings on my daughter's guitar yet it sat in her closet until I took it out and made a cool light for my room with it. I paid a lot of money for those guitars, they cost me a great deal. Even greater than these guitars, we have a Savior that paid a great price so our sins can be forgiven yet, unfortunately, many of us never pick up Jesus. We just continue to reject his offer of salvation and we put him in the closet to be forgotten while we are busy doing other things.

<itunes:subtitle>The Holy Spirit falls on the apostles and it causes a great commotion. A crowd gathers and they think the apostles are drunk. So Peter stands up and we see the display of the power of the Holy Spirit as Peter quotes, with great confidence, the prophet Joel as well as some Psalms as he preaches the very first sermon given by the Spirit. It convicts many of the Jews that were present and they are obedient to the instructions given. What instructions and why do we want to argue about them? Why not just do what he says? </itunes:subtitle>

<itunes:subtitle>Fact: God loves everybody, yes...everybody, His love is unconditional, and nothing can separate us from His love (Romans 8:38). You've heard it said before, "God hates the sin but sin loves the sinner." A problem I see is that people in today's society have confused God's unconditional love with salvation. Yes, God loves everyone but not everyone is saved! The ones who will be saved are the ones who repent of their sin, accepts Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, and does his will and not their own. Have you made that choice?
