Then, since you continued to do the thing they said to quit doing, you get your punishment. The parent was implying “Do not continue doing what you are doing” when they said “If you continue doing that...” You had a choice to make...right? To continue or not continue. Paul tells the church at Colosse they have started strong in the faith, and now they have accepted Jesus, they must continue to follow him which implies you have a choice: continue to follow Jesus or don’t continue to follow Jesus. The people who saw this happen was amazed and they started to ask the question, “Could this man be the Messiah?” The simple answer is “Yes” but was it so simple? There are many who reject Jesus to this day so what’s the difference? You may say, “Well they had Jesus walking around with them so they should have known,” but it’s not that easy. They had preconceived ideas of who and what the Messiah would be and Jesus didn’t fit the bill. So the Pharisees used any opportunity they could to reject Jesus and this time they accuse him of working miracles by the power of Satan. Jesus tells them straight up that a kingdom divided cannot stand and if he is working miracles by the power of the Holy Spirit, then the kingdom of God has come. The people who saw this happen was amazed and they started to ask the question, “Could this man be the Messiah?” The simple answer is “Yes” but was it so simple? There are many who reject Jesus to this day so what’s the difference? You may say, “Well they had Jesus walking around with them so they should have known,” but it’s not that easy. They had preconceived ideas of who and what the Messiah would be and Jesus didn’t fit the bill. So the Pharisees used any opportunity they could to reject Jesus and this time they accuse him of working miracles by the power of Satan. Jesus tells them straight up that a kingdom divided cannot stand and if he is working miracles by the power of the Holy Spirit, then the kingdom of God has come. After talking with an angel he sends men to get Peter in Joppa and bring him to his home in Caesarea. While the men were gone to get Peter, Cornelius invites his friends and family over to hear what Peter has to say. When Peter arrives he simply shares the gospel, the good news of Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection. Before he could finish his talk, the holy Spirit falls on the Gentiles in the room and they speak in tongues. It was exactly what happened to Peter and the other apostles in Acts 2 so Peter immediately recognized what was going on. Game changer! What's the big deal? A lie cost Ananias and Sapphira their lives. They had sold their property and kept some of the money for themselves but when they came to give it to the apostles to help the needy, they lied about how much they had sold the property for thinking nobody knew what they had planned together. The only problem was they didn't think about the fact that God is all knowing and He sees everything! Peter calls them out on it and said, "You didn't lie to us...you lied to God!" Immediately they fell to the ground dead.
